'special' microphone cable...
« on: May 31, 2009, 04:27:29 AM »
Hello,

Does anybody know how/where to get the 'special' microphone cable that e.g. Sennheiser uses for their lapel mics?
It's really thin, flexible, very strong (has a separate steel wire) and is usually terminated in a small, expen$ive Lemo connector (mini-XLR-ish but smaller).
What is the brandname/type that I need to look for to get that cable?

And now that we're talking about Lemo as well: Does anybody know about a cheaper, but similar connector? It has to be small, locking and well made. Connector needs to carry about three wires.
A locking, angled mini-jack would do but where to get the plugs and chassis-sockets?

Tips are welcome!

Kind regards,
Udo

Can't you use any (not specific Sennheiser) thin and strong cable?
If so: does anybody here have the tip?

I will sell some of my stock cable for DIY people. Its $.35 per foot + shipping. For mogami 2 conductor + shield. I can also supply large spool quantities as well.

This cable looks thin etc. Is it strong and does it sound OK? Then it might fit udovdh's requirements.

It doesn't have a steel drain wire, but the signal wires are interwound with plastic fibers so it remains quite flexible.  I wouldn't recommend running it along a floor where it would get stepped on though--it's a lapel cable.  Capacitance is rather high at 100pF/ft (from memory), so that's another reason not to use it for a long run.

What lengths of this cable would you think are acceptable?

Electrically, 30 to 50ft given the high output impedance of many lapel-type mics.  Mechanically, 15 ft.  Longer than that means it's probably on the floor which I think is a bad idea.  It would be OK to go longer if it's hanging.

Here are some information on Mogami Cables:

http://www.mogamicable.com/Bulk/micr_cables/lavalier/lavalier.htm

http://www.mogami.com/e/cad/mic-cable.html

http://www.mogami.com/e/mit/distributors.pdf

For longer runs the W2901 seems to be a better choice.

Hi Udo,
You can look for Neutrik's NanoCon http://www.neutrik.com/de/de/industry/204_1723120361/NanoCon%c2%ae_productlist.aspx or their new mini-XLR comming soon. I think they will be a lot cheaper than the Lemos or Fischer. Binder have some small size conneectors too.

another cable suggestion is RamTek.  its very thin...very pliable.  good quality.
LMA recordings and what-not

Live music: hauling around a Marshall stack whose output will get squeezed through a single SM57, then mangled by a Guinness-soaked mixer and shoved through suspicious-smelling power amps into a pair of grungy cabinets whose best days were before they left the factory, all of which are under the control of an engineer who would much rather be at home watching television.

@ROger: thanks, but no suitable chassis mounts?
Will try the nanocon series for now.
