DIN/NOS/ORTF/X-Y template idea
« on: April 02, 2006, 08:44:02 PM »
I've read posts from newbies that they wonder how we manage to set up our mics exactly to the specified spacing and angles that define the four patterns in the subject line.  Some have made paper templates; others pack a protractor and measuring tape.  Still others are so good... me for instance...  ;)  that they don't need no stinking tool.  Whatever.

I have managed to produce a template that combines all of these patterns on the same sheet of transparency.  I'm going to take it out tonight and see what the guys think and if it goes over well, I'll repost taking "orders" for the thing.  Cost will be either minimal or some sort of BnP type barter.

Let me know if this is of general interest or if everyone just thinks that this is part of the fun of learning the ropes.

... as you were.

Edit by Brian Skalinder: Thanks God it was pre Daspyknows....

O-Canis attached the PDF further down the thread. [reply #14] But I also added it to the TS Reference section since we occasionally - though rarely - purge attachments during maintenance.

Here it is.  I don't know if it will scale correctly, but you'll get the idea.  Working with it tonight I found that the line work was less than ideal in low light conditions... so the next version will have to have white lines and text to accomodate that problem.

If you email me a PDF (or even just the image file), I'll <a> u/l it to the Reference section, <b> add a link here so everyone may access it full scale, and <c> move the thread to the Mics & Setup forum.

I'm going to take it out tonight and see what the guys think and if it goes over well, I'll repost taking "orders" for the thing.

One of the guys chiming in.  Dave brought it out last night and I'm happy to add it to my bag.  Would've loved it as a newbie, and will still get great use out of it now.  Very easy quick set up for your configurations.

Indeed, low light was an bit of an issue, but even without fixing that I highly recommend this.

The actual product Dave's got is to an accurate scale, so it's not just reference, it's an actual tool (so the image Dave posts won't do you too much good other than just to take a peek at what he's doing).  How to use:
1. Config your mics to what you think is accurate.
2. Place Dave's transparency over the tops of your mics to see if you've got it correct.  If they line up on point, you're all set, or...
3. Adjust accordingly.

Now, everyone ask Dave what time it is this morning!!!  Turns out Dave's got a little Daylight Savings issue...    :P   :P   :P  :P  ;)

every time i log in and see my count go down......i can't help but laugh hysterically!  i think it's too funny.  i feel sorry for the person, but their sorrow/anger brings me joy so it all works out :)

as for protractors and measuring tools......here in st. louis our venues are either XY or PAS.  any outsider who brings in a measuring device has secretly offered to buy the first and last rounds of beer for the whole taping crew ;D

;D That's the down side of this for sure.  I really only toss it out there for those who feel that this is really important stuff to have.  I'll attach the PDF here.  You'll see it has two complete templates that should help economize on the transparencies that you use up at the office.  BEWARE.  Transparencies and office copiers tend to not get along very well after the first two or three.  I jammed ours up Saturday and nothing would come out till Copy Repair Guy left a half hour ago.  :P

If anyone wants one with out the hassle of Kinkos or risking their office equipment, PM me and we'll work out the details.  Material cost at Kinkos is about $1.50 / transparency.
