[comp] 722 vs. r09 behind psp2
« on: February 20, 2008, 01:02:49 PM »
mg200 ortf > psp2 > 722 @ 0.0dB, 24/96 & unbal out to r09 @ trim setting 8, 24/48
Wavelab 5 192K resample and UV22HR dither

The psp2 has balanced and unbalanced outputs. The unbal was routed to the r09. I forgot my ratshack 1/8 to 1/8 cable so the r09 feed was via a ratshack 1/8 to rca plus a cheesy rca 1/8 adapt plug (thanks Chris!!). No gain was added to the r09 source in post, while the 722 source was increased by 3.23dB.

Psp2? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn_ku9nmA8U :) What's a Psp2?

I know what an R09 and 722 are
I know what flac files are
I like the blind testing

...so I am not completely lost :)

They sound the same to me. So I started looking more closely...

Indeed I can get periods of perfect phase cancellation in my DAW (drifts in and out) but when they are in perfect anti-phase, silence.

The psp2 is a fairly rare transformer based pre-amp that is no longer manufactured.  If you do a search on psp2 you'll find bits and pieces of info.

A very very slight preference to sample b.  Sound pretty close to me.

SPOILERS...

A=r09
B=722

The samples were each downloaded 19 times.

I thought the results of the poll were pretty interesting.. I'm surprised there were no votes for A given the number of folks who could not hear a difference. I imagine some folks were skewed by Spyder9's post.  In some comps I have asked folks not to post absolutes like that and I suppose that isn't a bad idea. On the one hand you want to get subjective impressions, etc, but not if it skews the comp.

I remain Very impressed by the r09.. Especially when you consider the crap cables used in this test.  The unbalanced cable was pretty long (8') and there were people using cellphones all around.

It's always a good idea to use a forced choice (and not allow 'no difference').  Yes, hiding the opinions of others is also very important.

I put these in my DAW and swapped between them with a cross-fader, they were indistinguishable to me using a pair of Sennheiser HD 280 headphones. As I noted there were also periods of complete cancellation when they came in to anti-phase (I inverted the phase on one of them).
