Troubles getting a digital signal with V3> D8 ??
« on: March 29, 2005, 02:02:56 PM »
Has anyone ever had problems getting a Sony portable, particularly a D7 or D8, to accept a digital signal from the spdif coax out of the V3?

I haven't had problems myself, but after John R's post in the patching thread and a thread in the CO Crew, I got to wondering.  The spdif standard calls for a digital one to be represented by a +0.5v signal level.  This is the signal level the V3 outputs on its coax output, conforming to the standard.  But it is my understanding that sony portables do not conform to the spdif standard (ironically, it's the Sony-Philips Digital InterFace standard, sony designed it, but then ignores it).  The D7/D8 output and expect a +4.5v level, the M1/D100 output a +3.3v level.  I've always been lead to believe this is why D8's can't get a signal from D100's -- they expect 4.5v but the M1/D100 only put out 3.3v.

But if the V3 only puts out the standard's +0.5v, why aren't people having problems connecting D8's up to the V3?

I'm not sure about the V3 but I've definitely run a D8 out of the coax ouput from an AD2K+ with no problems...

whenI first started taping, I couldn't get a good signal from my AD-20 -> D8 (until I had my AD-20 modified).
But I haven't had any trouble at all going V3 >D8, with a passive 7-pin oade cable.  I've successfully used both the S/PDIF output and the AES1 output from the V3.

why I haven't had any trouble?  I don't know, but I know that it works.

Personally, I haven't had any problems the few times I have run my D8 from the V3.

I didn't see the original thread you are referencing, but did you check the V3 SPDIF out with a voltmeter? This might shed some light on your question.

Take care,
Ben

I never measured the V3 output with a meter, but I talked with Jamie and Mike Grace about it and they told me the V3 was designed to put out +0.5v for a digital one on the spdif out.  I had been interested in hacking my JB3 to allow a coax input rather than optical, so Jamie at Grace Design altered the spdif out on my V3 to put out +5v.  So at this point, I can't test mine with a meter to find out what the typical output level of a V3 is since my V3 isn't typical.

Just to clarify -- I have never had a problem.  I'm just curious whether anyone else has.  Just curousity and trying to make sense why an M1 can't pass a signal to a D8 when it only outputs 3.3v but a V3 can pass a signal to a D8 when it outputs just 0.5v.

In another thread, John R said he was having troubles passing a signal to someone using a D8.  I have no idea if this was at the root of it, but I was wondering whether anyone else had this trouble.  Apparently not.

weird, i know from the days of phish section taping that all the sony decks are weird

to get a consistent signal w/ a chain of d/7 and d/8's, you had to run them like this:

d7>d8>d7>d8>d7>d8>and so on and to get aclean m1-d100 chain, you had to put them in a whole nother chain, and sometimes the sony's would all be picky aboutgetting a digi signal from a dap1 in my encounters

but its weird, ifya dont dothe d7>d8>d7>d8 thing, the levels drop about 3-4dbs towards the end of the chain ???

leave it to sony to make theyre OWN decks not compatible w/ each other :P
