Powering a Sound Devices Mixpre
« on: November 28, 2012, 12:12:37 PM »
All, I am picking up a used SD Mixpre from the YS.  I want to make sure I can power it using my RB-270 5400 mAh 9V DVD battery.  Seems like it should work without issue, just looking to confirm.

Here are the power specs from the URL below.

External DC input - 5-18V on locking 4-pin Hirose connector, pin-4(+), pin-1(-)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/292988-REG/Sound_Devices_MIXPRE_Mixpre_Portable_2.html

If you think it will work, I'll hit up Ted to see if he can make me a cable.

Thanks.

Yes a 9V DVD battery will power it no problem.  I have a shipment of Hirose connectors coming in within the next few days.  I will PM you with more details shortly.

You should be fine as long as it's not a MixPre-D which requires a higher voltage.

Speaking of yard sale, you might be interested in this to go along with your MixPre.  ;)  http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=158860.0

I sometimes run mine with a USB (5V) battery, but more often with a 9V DVD.

While I should switch over to rechargeables, I use this 4 AA box with the MixPre or anything needing 5V/1A:

I get crazy runtime with energizer lithiums, at least 12 hours with phantom running my mics.

Tekkeon also has one for a bit more $:

Rechargeables should work in that box. 5 volts with rechargeables/6 volts with alkalines.

I'd never use lithiums, because you have to keep track of how long you've used them (battery level on recorder will show full until almost dead in most cases). And if you change them way early for safety, it's costing you a lot of money.

I love low self discharge rechargeables.

Thanks all, shifting gears.... The meters on the Mixpre seem to be analog, no? I'm looking for tips for running this into my M10. I plan to run tape out/return via 1/8" stereo mini into line in on my M10. Tips are welcome. Anything I should know, shouldn't do, etc...

Turn on the MixPre's tone switch then calibrate your recorders meters to match the MixPre's.
