A Mini-Me gain question:
« on: June 18, 2004, 10:51:11 AM »
I just got my Mini-Me this week and was testing everything this morning. I'm taping the Dead at Red Rocks tonight, probably in the rain.
The first thing I did was change the internal jumpers to the LOW gain setting.
With my Josephson/MBHO's I have to turn the gain up to around the 5 o'clock position to get the levels I need.
Does this sound normal? When my Oktava's I set the gain at 1 o'clock to get the same levels.
I'm wondering If I should re-set the internal jumpers?

It doesn't say how much the padding is in the LOW setting.
I was PMing Marc and he told me he has a buddy that runs his gain pretty high with the MBHO's.

set it to lo gain and LEAVE IT THERE. different mics have all kinds of sensitivity levels. I doubt you had it that loud in your living room, or whatever.

Stick with what Marc said...LOW GAIN.  The Octava's just seem to run hotter, needing less gain.

Well, I broke it in last night.
No problems using the LOW gain setting and just cranking the levels.

Thanks guys.

Does the jumper change anything dealing with the line in, i have to push my v2 pretty hard and actually clipped the tom's at moe a couple weeks ago cause i had the calpots cranked as far as they will go and had the red lights on the v2 poppin like crazy, anyone know, im guessing the line in doesnt change with the jumper setting

actually, I don't think it does affect line in, might have misspoke in a prior post. Problem is, running it all the way open means you can't supply much outboard gain. I'd say if you run the screw pots wide open, you can't send more than 15 db's, not a surprise you clipped the mme. gotta calibrate at home to absolutely avoid being able to clip the mme.

The jumpers should not affect the line in...it is for mic in only.  Try turning down the V2 till the red lights stop popping  :o  You should also calibrate your V2 MME line in ....you will be happier for it.  that way you can 86 the cal pot action and use the V2's controls.  Were the MME red's popping?

but you actually have to work to clip the mme, I generally shoot for mostly greens, common -2 yellows, and a few reds don't bug me. pretty damn easy to clip a v2, though, analog clipping sucks.

ya, it's pretty forgiving......I like to see the yellows peak out a bit (glow).  That way it's set and forget.

ive was running the levels pretty hot on the v2, and i didnt specify, but it was
the v2 that was somewhat clipping, but i had a chance to listen to the tape on
my buddies playback, which is way better than mine, and it didnt sound so bad,
just a slight distortion on the tom, im actually quite happy with it, and thanks for
all your help guys, +T to the thread

I know this is an old topic, but I am wondering if I should set the jumpers to low gain when paired with a LSD2?   ???

Thanks, Kevin

low gain always.

Only time I would personally use high gain settings is for nature recordings.

+Thanks, stirinthesauce, for clearing that up.  Now, what bothers me, is the the first little stainless 1/16th hex button head screw i try to take out feels like there's thread-lock on it.  Stinkin' stainless --- not very tough -- hope I don't strip the tiny hex and have to grind these heads off...........................send good vibes
