Maybe someone can tell me which settings will do a great recording for tonights session:
-loud bass heavy funk-rock show
-small club 300 people max
-good acoustics
-mics: church audio stc-11 cardioids with 4.7k mod
-preamp: church audio st-9100(2 wire = 1/8" = 3.5mm plug)
-recorder: iriver H140 rockboxed

I got Chris´ gear yesterday and ran some tests on my home stereo where I realised the impact of the 4.7k mod with it´s known decrease of about -15dB.
As a result of the decreased sensitivity, I would use lots(80%) of the 9100 gain to compensate the 4.7k mod impact and no gain(0dB) from the iriver´s internal preamp.
100% gain on the 9100-pre are about +23dB according to Chris.

Do you think the iriver´s combined mic/line in will get overloaded by the 9100 pre set at 80% of maximum?

thx for any advice within the next 7 hours ;).
Arni

I don't know about your mod but I always start recording by setting my h380 to +15dB and adjust the st-9100 accordingly, and let AGC-safety do its job during the concert. So far I haven't even used the bass-rolloff.

I did an accoustic concert recording last weekend that required lots of gain (100% on the st-9100) and around 15-17 dB on the iriver and noise levels are good. The st-9100 is a super pre-amp ;)

seems like i nailed my 1st church-audio gear show!  ;D
sounds great from what I´ve heard so far.
it was really really loud....black metal-funk-rock in a small club.

set my rockboxed iriver to +5dB "AGC-safety" and the CA-ST-9100-preamp to 50% gain(knob pointed to 12 o´clock).
in the end levels where still at +5dB gain on the iriver what means the automatic level-reduction was not needed as the levels never clipped ;).
the good thing on the 9100 pre is that all connections are on the top side of the pre(gain-knob, input, output)..so it´s easy to handle when put in your trousers belt.

no normalisation necessary for this recording.
sounds great!

so I can highly recommend Chris Church and his stuff!  ;D

I'm glad to hear it turned out well for you.  The 9100 is a really great pre.

Thanks guys! I am glad your happy, I worked pretty hard on the 9100 to make it a very small compact preamp that sounds good and has low noise.

Talk about low noise... Last weekend I had my first accoustic recording, and I had to set the st-9100 to max gain. I was affraid it would turn out noisy but it was just perfect.

Thanks again Chris for making this lovely gear :)
