Best UA-5 w/ Oktava MC012?
« on: August 01, 2003, 01:04:24 AM »
Ok, I'm getting the Oktavas from Hoobash, now I need something to run them through.  The UA-5 looks like where I'm heading, but I don't know if I should got straight digi-mod, warm, or presence.

Ideas?

running the oktavas myself through a usbpre, i think you should go with the presence mod, i think it would really brighten up these mics.  by nature they have a pretty warm sound...at least through my pre they do.  i have tapes of oktavas through the usbpre (sound devices pre-amp, similar to mp2) and some through a denecke ad-20, and i can get some through a v3 if you wanna hear comparisons.  i may put these together anyways just for reference.  i'm a big fan of the oktavas, for the money they can't be beat.

Some get great results with the W-mod UA-5 and MC012's.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

I run the oktavas and just got a w-mod ua5

i have only taped a local band a couple of times, with pretty damn good results.

i taped them sat nite at a pretty damn bass heavy show, the sound is not as thick as i would have thought...more smooth across the low end.
it really sounds good on playback, and i thought the sound at the show was weak.

got lots more taping to do b/f i'm convinced...i'll keep you updated.

its gonna be pretty damn hard to beat the oktava>dmic combo i have been running

Modifiy your Oktavas internally to handle bass better... I did it with mine and it was a huge difference.

yeah joeshambro...
how did you mod the oktavas?  what was it that you didn't want to hear anymore and how did you determine what to modify?  i'd like to hear all about it...dunno if i will do it to my oktavas but i'm really interested in knowing about it.
also...whoever has been using the oktavas with other pre's, got anything to download?  i'd like to hear these mics with diff pres, i use a usbpre and like it but don't know what they'd sound like otherwise.

Joe? Any insight on the bass-mod?  Sounds interesting... bass seems to be the #1 complaint with oktava users/listeners.

Simp-Dawg,

What were your thoughts on the Oktavas with the AD-20?  I just picked up a pair and I can't decide which way I want to go with the preamp.

Thanks,

Bob

I have a bunch of shows on archive.org that are MK012>UA-5(digi-out mod)>D8 if you want to check em out.
There are the two Mamacita shows (one outdoor with cards, one indoor with hypers), sweet ass band.

I got plenty of Oktava mc-012>ad-20 tapes if you need a sample. I use a Rolls for phantom power.  I get good results with this set up.
