Title: Anyone have a bunch of files disappear from external hard drive
Post by: MakersMarc on December 21, 2018, 09:04:20 PM
So I tried to listen to a show on my Player and I'd screwed up the setlist. So I got on the computer to fix the misses, and I notice a shitload of files from the Passport are gone. WTF. The external is a 2tb WD drive. Anyone have his happen?

I have almost all the files in a couple of places, and I have Backblaze so not a huge deal. My lappie has limited storage so I really need to use an external but am assuming this ones a dud, only a few months old. 😬

What OS? I'd run a disk check (method depends on OS) on it first. If that checks out OK, are you using any kind of syncing/backup software?

seach for something you can think of that's missing and see if they got moved?

Or analyze the directories with something like Grand Perspective on the mac, or Tree Size Free for pc

Linux- https://alternativeto.net/software/treesize/?platform=linux

Disk checks out. To my knowledge I don’t have any synch/backup software.

You may have inadvertently dragged the missing folders into another folder.  I've done that.

Wouldn’t the used gb space reflect that? It’s about half of what it was.

If it's a PC, you could try ZAR (Zero Assumption Recovery) to do forensics?
It might take a day or two on a large drive, and might or might not recover much or most, but it sounds like you'll be utilizing that Backblaze subscription.

Been there, done that.

The correct explanation is usually the simplest one.

Glad you found them.

Ahhh, the ol' left my files in my other pants variant.  Been there done that. All part of being over (or pushing) 60.  ;D  Feel lucky that you're only trying to manage one or two externals.  Me? I've got 6 that are connected and 4 that are on the shelf as deep archives.
I hope you have something stored at another location as well? Off Site Backup. Safety deposit box, storage unit, mom's place, a friend's attic, mail one to new jersey...

Had 99% of files on another passport, and the rest on a Fiio, which I rembered about after I spend hours trying to get Backblaze restore to work. For whatever reason, the Transfer kept being interrupted, I'm guessing because it I sold about 600 gb. If I ever need to truly restore I'm taking the option of having a USB stick sent to me.

Thanks all for the help! Everything checks me out now must have been user error. Shocked, I know.😛

'Glad you were able to recover.

In the interim, one of my WD passports gave me a scare. I spent some of Christmas day running a scan and recovery diagnostic. Turns out nothing was found bad  but I guess I'll go invest in a new full size drive and case and carry on.  It's time.

I copy all run of the mill stuff to at least two external HDs. Unique stuff I copy to five or six HDs, including one typically stored outside of my house.

With any external drive, the likelihood of failure in the CASE is more likely than a failure of the drive itself. WHEN this happens, you might be able to save your data by swapping the raw drive into a similar case. There are specifics to this, like matching models and firmware versions, but the basics are pretty straightforward.

A note though- many of the newer compact portable USB drives that have come out in recent years don't have a proper SATA connection, but some can still be swapped into a similar case to save the data. That said, once I figured this out, I switched back to full-size drives in full-size external cases.
