CF Recorder
« on: October 16, 2005, 12:23:26 AM »
for recording festivals, and not wanting to buy a bunch of CF cards, i started searching for OTG drives for transfers.  I was a little leery of transfer times from the mt2496>OTG drive, hoping not to get caught mid-transfer by the beginning of the next set.  i found this with a 30G drive:  http://www.qcool.cn/QcoolOTGVI.htm

hopefully it will meet me in suwannee for magfest, and it will do the trick.

we all live downstream.

where are the ins and outs on this beast?
Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

It just takes data off a flash card and puts it onto a hard drive, it's not an audio recorder.

thanks bud ;D

seems VERY reasonable, so I bookmarked the page ;D

you figure usb 2.0 card reader+OTG drive=prolly about the same

im sure the card reader+OTG drive would be a lil cheaper, but the all-in-one conveniuence of this thing ROCKS ;D

I'll be getting one for sure ;D

john-I'm sure you will, but I'd love some updates of how fast this thing transfers a full 2-4GB ;D

it HAS to be faster than components since its all on-board, wouldnt you think ???

Unfortunately this page doesn't have information on plain USB 2.0 OTG drives, but it does have a lot (and I mean a lot!) of good information (either listed on the page or contained in the reviews/discussions that are linked from this page) on a large number of portable storage devices. 8)

And as a quick summary, Savit Micro's Nexto CF and the CompactDrive PD70X are the two fastest PSDs (getting around or greater than 10MB/s with the right CF cards; and to my knowledge they are not sold in North America so you'd have to have them shipped worldwide), there are a few that get around 5MB/s (with the CompactDrive PD7X being a popular model as it's cheap (~$120 US vs about 150 to $180 for the other two - and these prices do not include the internal hard drive!) - but do note the comments under the 'Reliability & Polemic' section in Frederic Houde's review of it), and all the rest (at least those which do have the actual CF to PSD transfer rates listed) are below 3.3MB/s - with a number of them being limited to USB 1.x speeds (1.5MB/s).

sorry bean, it started at 89, i paid 102

noice!

yeah, i'm digging it.  $100 for a reader and 30G, no problem here.  i looked at that review site, pretty nice.  the top one has fw,  sweet.  the speed sections are hard to read evenly, since it seems manufacturers use different cards with different speeds(surprise!)  the one i got appears to have middle of the road speed from CF>HD.  i'll send in reports from the field, as suwannee has wifi.

the card is not slow.  the drive runs with medium speed.  the page referenced above have specs on many otg readers with many options and speeds.  http://fhoude34.free.fr/PortableHD_Main.htm

it isfast enough to transfer between sets, and that's fast enough for me, especially for what i paid

Any news on this?  Transfer times and battery life are my concerns with the QCOOL unit. Recording a 5-day festival is easy with DAT, but recording at 24-bit to CF, I might need something better than the QCOOL, maybe the PD70X.

That's a really neat device.  It doesn't come with a HD, though, I don't imagine.  I think I might get one of these at some point.

thats what im gonna get eventually, and yes they do come w/ HD's, they are just pricey and youre better off putting your own 80GB in or something :)

those are THE BOMB, at 16MB/Sec transfer speed, its the quickest out at the moment, and looks to be the most rugged/stable as well, but who knows, i havent touched one

After spending some more time online, I found the Digital Photography Review, Storage & Media forum. Lots of informative posts, and the HyperDrive HD80 is similar to the PD70X. I'll be doing a lot more reading before I'll make any recommendations to users here. Seems like there may be Mac compatibility problems, a big deal for me.

200 bucks for the 40 gig version sounds like a deal to me.  I would never use this thing to store recordings long-term... just need enough to get me through the show (for taping multiple sets).  Thanks for the link.
