Archive of files Question
« on: February 17, 2004, 08:47:03 PM »
I have a JB3 that I have been using and I just wonder what some of you other JB3 users or PC users are doing.
My question is:  I record to .wav 48khz with my JB3, upload to my PC, mark the tracks, then save the file as 44.1khz so I can burn it.  What do you guys do with the original 48khz source files? I'd rather not leave them on my PC since I'd start to fill my harddrive. Though I'd rather not delete them either. Should I convert to .flac or .shn? Just curious what the general thought is out there.
All opinions welcome,
TIA,
jimmc

My intention (as a new jb3 taper) is to convert to FLAC and burn files to cd-r for storage. My harddrive isn't that big (60gig) and I have lots of other stuff there too.

word, convert to flac and store on CD-R.  You can even put 2 or even 3 shows per disc depending on length

Hah, sometimes I have a hard time fitting a show on just one CD.  If I recorded at 48khz, I know of a few shows that wouldn't compress down enough.  Really pisses me off when I can't fit a show on one CD.

My workflow is like this:

1) Transfer recording from JB3 to computer
2) rename file to reflect band & date
3) type up rough setlist info, recording date, venue, source, mic config, etc
4) *optional* track out the show in CDWav and save the CUE sheet
5) compress the raw recording to FLAC or SHN
6) burn compressed file+md5, setlist, and possibly cue sheet to CD for archival
7) do any EQ, normalizing, downsampling, etc.
8) load processed file in CD Wave and output the tracks using CUE sheet created earlier
9) do any fades, etc
10) SHN or FLAC the individual tracks, generate md5s
11) somewhere in there do a proper setlist with song names
12) Burn processed/tracked show off to CD for archival
13) Delete all that shit off my HD to make room for more porn.

:)

i usually convert to 44.1 and spread them around, save the cue sheet from cd wav, the info file, and the 48.0 original and just burn those to dvdr, usually don't save the 44.1 version, its easy enuf to convert it and split it again with the cue sheet.

here's what i'd do in your shoes...
resample the original 48khz file to a new filename at 44.1khz
track it in cd wave, save cue sheet
delete 44.1khz file, keep the tracks for burning and seeding
track the 48khz file using the cue sheet from the 44.1 version
flac 'em all
archive both versions!

this is what i do, except since i record at 24bit/48khz i have a more significantly higher resolution copy for archival, and also significantly larger in size.  if you're gonna go to the trouble of recording at a higher resolution, then you might as well archive it...if you're only planning to keep the cd-quality version why record any higher than that anyways??  true you can get a more accurate recording, but not all of the resampling and dithering tools out there are of the highest quality.  someday you may find something that works better for you and you can go back and resample your archived stuff again.
and i say also archive the tradable version (16/44.1) because it's easier to have it all ready than having to go back and resample the original again.

transfer the original 48k wavs > SRC to 44.1k, track show, burn to DVDr for easy reference.

2nd step, transfer 48k wavs, flac them raw without breaks, burn to DVDr for later reference (i.e. move away from magnetic storage and embrace the optical medium)
