I remeber looking at those preamps before I bought the USBPre2. And there was something that made me cross it off the possible list...for ma at least. I can't remember but possibly it was powering it or something about the input levels and adjustments seems to ring a bell. Without looking at it I am not positive.

Ding Ding Ding...winner. That was it the 1/4 out even with TRS I would have needed to add TRS cable or adapters to my inventory.
edited to add from what I remember reading the box sounds just fine, and it would probably be a nice choice especially for the price. But at that price I dunno exactly what the pre sounds like....transparent, warm, etc.

Sounds like a warm pre better suited for bright mics. Sounds like the warmth is too much for a warm mic.....

RME preamps are neutral sounding and their electronics are of very high quality. I used a small four-channel preamp of theirs for a while without any problems whatsoever.
People who attribute "warmth" or other particular sonic qualities to various mike preamps should be aware that in many cases, those sonic qualities depend on the output impedance of the microphones and/or the input impedance of the bit of gear that the preamp is connected to. The same preamp with different equipment connected to it will not necessarily have those same apparent qualities.
Of course some preamps are actually designed purposely to generate so-called "euphonic" distortion. But in my experience nearly all preamps that don't have this type of interfacing problem, aren't designed to "have a sound," and that have low distortion and flat frequency response, sound so nearly alike as to be indistinguishable.

^^^ I agree that most (decent) preamps will sound very similar.
What I have noticed, however, is much of the lower-end gear can have differences, mainly in clarity/level of detail. A good example is the regular Edirol UA5 vs. a modded one. I attribute these differences to trying to run standard opamps (eg., NJM, NE5532, or similar) at lower voltages, like +/-5V, or even just single sided +5V supplies. Many chips are not even spec'd down to that level! Compare that to mixers. Even the lowly Behringer run their chips at +-15V supplies. I believe it takes significant attention to detail to get great sound from "USB level" systems, either stepping up the voltage inside, or by choosing opamps that work well at lower voltage levels. The most challenging is running at 3 or even 2.5V, like flash recorders use. Compare the self noise on a well-made circuit, like Sony PCM series to Zoom, etc.

I know a guy who has been using the Fireface 400 and has had problems with digi artifact which intermittently comes and goes. Maybe just that unit, may be others, I don't know.

I really liked how the quadmic sounded with my Milab VM-44's. The TRS connectors however did give me some problems and I eventually moved on to a portico which was much much warmer.

I've got one, it's clean and neutral. I only really use it for recording when I'm running 4 channel and have a bit of space in the bag as an upgrade to the R-44 pres. The power input options for it are really useful though, it'll take 7-28V DC or AC so you can run it off practically anything. Phase reverse can sometimes be a lifesaver too.

I do and I love it to bits. Solid, compact, nice and clear sounding without any undue "warmth". I particularly like the fact that it runs on any AC or DC voltage between 7 and 27/38 volts.
Now, what would be the problem with its TRS outputs? What am I missing? ;-)

Most of the newer interfaces (Micstacy, Fireface 400/UC, Fireface UFX) use the TI PGA2500 which is digitally controlled and very clean. It's also in a few other products around including the Apogee Duet and MOTU Traveler Mk3

I'm guessing most here have XLR interconnects it would require new interconnects and (on my recorder) TRS is not locking...

Nice to see this chip getting into products. Much better than the typical NJM opamps we see in most gear.
