AD1K worth it?
« on: November 11, 2003, 10:28:32 AM »
I've got a chance to buy a broken AD1K for $150.

This is what the guy says about it:

The clock and the one of the boards were recently replaced.  It comes with 15 pin break out cable with one xlr for power, two spidif out.  I have a manual although they are also available at the apogee website for download if you wanted to check one out now.  Please keep in mind that my diagnosis may not be completely correct but my best guess is that the power supply looks to be arcing where it is sodered onto the board.  I removed the cover and turned on power and could see a very minimal spark at the board, and the power supply got very hot.  Previous to this the unit has worked exceptionally, it is also a platinum edition.

I'm pretty handy with fixing things and need some advice.
Should I go for it? Or is this unit a dinasaur that I shouldn't mess with?

I wonder if anyone else has experience in repairing this problem?

Apogee probably does.   ;)  I know, this isn't the answer you're looking for, but even though they're no longer servicing them, they may be able to provide you with info: documentation, part numbers, etc.  Worth a try.

Actually I e-mailed Gary at Apogee last night.
He confirmed that they don't repair them anymore and recommended I buy a Mini-Me!  :(
Maybe I'll beg in my next e-mail.
Of course He also said repair costs run $500-$600.
So it kind of defeats the purpose of find one so cheap.
If I get it I will try to repair it myself. IF that doesn't work does anyone know of a good component level repair shop? I should e-mail the Oades...

Try Paul at prodigitalinc.com. I've heard he's done work on them before.

don't buy that fucking thing. Be patient, and at least search for one with a new word clock and/or digital circuit board, at least you'd have a fighting chance then. I think the going price for a cosmetically great unit with a new w/c is probably like 500 bucks anyway.

I contacted Paul. This is what he said:
I'm surprised they don't repair them anymore!  We can fix most problems with the AD 500's and 1000's.

Please send unit w/ your 15 pin cord (We have one here but would like to check yours as well) and a note and we'll call w/ quote to repair.

if its just the power supply with the problem, I'd say go for it if its really only $150!(especially if it had the word clock replaced recently)
power supplies are cheap and can be fixed easily

Doug Oade e-mailed me back that me he doesn't work on these units.

Pro Digital Inc, is the only place I have found so far that will work on them.

Its a risk. I bet you have to dump at least another $150 into. The problem is you really dont know. Be prepared to be out the $150 on it

Still, $300 total on a great pre A/D is good.
I really think I can fix it myself though.
