AES/EBU -> RCA
« on: March 05, 2004, 05:44:29 PM »
I saw the info posted in the archival section but nobody ever answered the question about which connections on the XLR correspond to ring/tip on the RCA end.  Thought it might be pertinent enough to post here as well.

Is this correct?  Just want to make sure.

tip(+) => pin 3
ring(ground) => pin 1

I know there is supposed ot be a (-) on pin 2 but I assume it is not necessary in this case because of Gauss' Law.

Oops, thought I responded to your old post.  Here's how mine's wired:

XLR
----------------
Pin 1 - shield
Pin 2 - (+)
Pin 3 - (-)

RCA
----------------
Center pin - (+)
Outer ring - (-)
Shield - not used

i have the canare lv-61s digital coax cable.  i don't see how you get 3 separate lines at the XLR connection.  there is only a shield and a thin center wire.  do i have the wrong cable?

i just got back from my fav electronic geek store, Pacific Radio Electronics, in Burbank, CA and discussed the AES > Coax cable appication with the cable guru there named Maurice.

Maurice is a great guy full of field knowledge and a recording engineer, too.

he HIGHLY recommended the following pin assignments:

i'll be using Canare LV-61S:

RCA > XLR

Center > Pin 2
Shield > Pin 1 and Pin 3

i described the application after he inquired why i wasn't using an impedence transformer.  he basically told me that "yes, your cable will pass the digital signal, but you may start too see errors in several digital generations down the line from the master."  "this is due to digital error masking/compensation algorithm in an AES/EBU signal."

anyone else heard of what he's describing?

anyways, here's the finished cable (going to Caymanreview.
