M/S with Schoeps & Vark bar
« on: January 18, 2008, 01:20:21 PM »
FYI, it's possible to run a nearly ideal M/S setup with Schoeps actives + MK caps and a Vark bar.  Two reasons it's not ideal:  <a> the front of the Mid cap aligns ~5mm forward of the exact center of the Side cap (the actual distance is probably less, since the Mid cap's diaphragm is set back a bit from the front grill) , and <b> the bend radius in the active cable is a little tighter than I'd like, but it's not too bad (see pic 3).  I may pick up another Vark bar extender (the piece in the first pic that's screwed onto the back of the cylindrical bar running through the shockmount) to run the caps a bit farther off the drilled-hole base to reduce the bend radius.  At any rate, close enough for me, for now.  Pics attached.

Edit to add...

The WMS windscreen fits the caps in this arrangement.

Another edit to add:

To reduce the rearward footprint (the Vark bar rod sticking out the back of the shockmount), simply remove the Vark bar rod and replace it with just the spacer.  The spacer sticks out enough to slot into the shockmount and hold securely, but it doesn't protrude out the back like the full rod.

well done Brian

such a low-pro setup too

thanks for sharing

Would simply rotating the A20 clamps in the vark bar 90deg alleviate the pinch into the vark bar itself?

or would that create too much of an imbalance?

edit - I see now how that will increase the distance between the caps.   ne'ermind...

Brian, actually your setup is better than you may realize. The ideal with coincident setups, including M/S, is to align the centers of the diaphragms vertically. You've done that to within a couple of millimeters, since the center of the MK 8's diaphragm is farther from the tip of the capsule than the center of the MK 5's diaphragm is. (If you look carefully at the top photo you can actually see the MK 8's diaphragm, while the MK 5's is recessed maybe about 3 mm behind its front grille.)

you could probably just add a few washers between the mic clip and the vark bar to give the cables some more room, and using more on oen clip than the other could allow you to get the caps closer to the right alignment.

FWIW, easy cable strain relief attained by simply rotating both SGC clips slightly to the same side of the Vark's drilled-holes bar, i.e. one clockwise, the other counterclockwise.
