Oade modded UA5s - GONE!!
« on: May 03, 2005, 11:55:15 AM »
Just talked to the fine folks at Oade Bros while ordering my Tmod+ UA5.   ;D

They indicated they have only 5 UA5s in stock and they don't have any prospects to pick up more units (discontinued, after all).  So, if you want one...or have been on the fence about pulling the trigger...note that they don't come up used all that often (though that may change as new gear hits the market)...and consider GETTING ONE NOW.

No affiliation, etc., just a friendly message based on my phone convo.

End of an era?  Congrats on the T+. I was just wondering if you picked one up yet.

So I wonder if they will consider modding units not bought through them now that it wont cut into their selling business?

Excellent point!

My assumption on that has been that they didn't want to be responsible for a used unit that may be busted when they got it.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

yeah, and I'd venture a guess that in the future, they will want to spend their time modding the Marantz recorders, the Fostex FR-2, probably the new Edirol R4, and whatever else may come down the pipeline.  they probably won't want to mod the older ua-5's anymore.

hmmmm......if I become a gear-slut at 8:03 AM, will I still respect myself by lunch??

My current rig:

   SPCM-8 > SPBM-6 > NJB3 (analog line in)

I was waiting for a check to arrive to step up and get a digital cable & then got real busy & spaced it. Was planning on grabbing the cable this AM (SP's recc. by Bean +t forthcoming).....and am know having early morning delusions about my financial status & whether or not I wanna 'give it up' to the Brothers Oade & confirm my gear-slut status. (do I scrawl my email on the wall of a Good Guys or somethin'?)

would love to hear some informed opinions regarding my position from those who've been here, gear-sluts, reformed g-sluts, even team-tapir-monastary with words of chaste.....how could this improve my bottom line, set me on a self destructive path of ebay binges & credit card frequent flyer miles, or a combination of the two?

i'm very curious about the stealth ability of the unit, it looks small....but these lyin' eyes have fooled me before. i think i've seen it on many lineage from great sounding stealth recordings...just want to make sure!

fwiw, i love the NJB3 and plan on sticking with the digital_recordable_nomedia forever....or until something flips the gear-slut in me i guess. i was absolutely drooling at the not-yet-released digital recorder that someone posted a link to a week or 3 ago....is the UA-5 going to serve me when I upgrade to that ($400'ish retail) when it becomes available?

thanks in advance to the brain-trust

It looks to me like Doug has made a fine business out of doing mods.  All the effort is in R&D - actually doing the mod work is no big deal.  That said, I would expect him to want to preserve that time investment and revenue stream into the future.  While UA-5s are available I can see why he'd prefer to sell you one and make the extra margin.  But if they're discontinued, I'd expect him to open it up to all UA-5s regardless of where they were bought.  No need to shut down a perfectly healthy mod business - the margins are better than selling unmodified retail stock.  Wait and see.

except that Doug has health issues that prevent him from spending a lot of time on the bench, this coupled with the fact that he is working on mods for other gear leads me to believe that this is probably it for the Oade mod-ua5's. He's not shutting down a perfectly healthy mod bsuiness, he's just changing the focus of that business.

i asked doug if he would continue to mod units he sold, he replied

"Hi!  Yes, I will continue to support the UA5s we sold for many more
years to come. Once we run out of them, we will not be selling new mod'd
units, but will continue do do MODS for a long time ! "

so for those of us who have em, we can add +'s or w, p, t.
which is good news.

From Oade.com:

We also offer a PLUS MOD that can be applied to any of the three analog input MODs. This further reduces noise and distortions in the UA5 by improving the DC supplies, phantom power and RCA inputs.

The UA-5 is no longer listed on the Oade site at all now.   :o
AKG C4000 > P-mod UA-5 > NJB3 (48KHz) > SVU-2
DPA 4061 (x1, hat mounted) > MPS 6010 > P-mod UA-5 >  NJB3 (48KHz)

Looking for another 4061 or even a pair of 406x mics to replace my single.  Please help me stealth in stereo.

I think the LSD2>wmod+ is going to be a killer set-up, easy to run, easy to pwr and a consistent stereo image...Plus I'll be able to knock any drun wooks over the head with the LSD2, that thing is very weapon like.

FYI, they told me that they're about 4 weeks behind on bench work.  So, if you plan on sending your Oade purhcased UA-5 in for an upgrade don't plan on getting it back for a month + ship times.

I listened to the samples they have on their site.  Honestly, the plus mod made a greater difference to my ears than just the warm/trans/presence mods.  And, the warm/trans/presence mods already make a huge difference!  I'm saving up cash so I can do a transparent plus mod.

Emailed Oade today to see if they would Mod the new UA-5 I just bought from Cascade - here's their sales response:

I am sorry but we simply do not have enough time to take all the work
that comes our way. I wish we had enough help to be able to do the work,
but we do not. Best of luck to you !

Emailed Oade today to see if they would Mod the new UA-5 I just bought from Cascade - here's their sales response:

I am sorry but we simply do not have enough time to take all the work
that comes our way. I wish we had enough help to be able to do the work,
but we do not. Best of luck to you !

That was a given.
They dont do mods on outside store purchases.

Yeah, but there was some speculation that they may mod outside units since they are no longer selling them. Posted the response I got from them to end any questions whether or not they would do outside units now.

That is not the feeling I get from conversations with Doug. Specially given his current back woes.
Busman2 makes a nice mod from what I hear.

This is not a surprise.  The reason they don't mod non-Oade boxes is not that they are trying to get you to buy their box, it is that there is not enough profit margin in just the mod to justify it.  That is a true statement regardless of whether they are currently selling the box or not.

Then why will they mod previously bought mod versions of the SBM and UA-5?  If there is no profit margin in the mods, then why do they accept those previosuly mod'd units?  I do not think it is a profit motive soley.  Personally, I think they do not want to accept the responsibility of voiding a warranty when they themselves did not originally crack open the unit (meaning who knows where the thing has been and they do not want people crying foul after Oade did their part).

There's probably a bit of that, too, but the offer to re-mod is just providing good customer service to existing customers.

My question is why don't they train and hire another bench tech?  Oade obviously has the ability to expand, they have more work than they have time.  They ought to do it, make us tapers happy  8)
