TCD-D3 manual
« on: June 04, 2003, 06:12:46 PM »
hey all,
just got my tcd-d3 in the mail today, looks to be in great shape and i've already put a tape in there and played around with it a little...
but as i have never used a dat deck before and am unfamiliar with the operation, i am looking for a d3 manual.
does anybody have one they could send to me, or copy, scan, email, etc.?
or even any helpful tips on dat recording (preferable specific to the d3 ;) ) would be much appreciated.  thanks all!

Also, I need advice on powering it.  What's the most economical way?  Why do I suddenly feel like a newbie?  ;)

I got a 6v SLA battery pack from paul at pro dig and it works great.  SLA is really the only way to go.  Even if you can find the stock rechargeable for it they don't last long.  There is a guy on ebay who sells the service manuals on CD.  I found a foriegn website once that had it for download but it took all day to get the first 10 pages on high speed at work.  As far as operation goes I believe Rec, Pause, Pause is all you need to get going.
When cleaning out her attic, Grace found several bootleg recordings her mother had made while traveling around the world with the Grateful Dead. Grace is not permitted to sell these bootleg recordings on eBay.

As far as power goes.  Dave from www.micsupply.com  hooked me up with a great set up.  Two 6vs and an awesome charger.  I highly recommend it.  Intelitender is the shit.

i spoke to dave yesterday about his ideas for charging a laptop in the field, rather, charging the batteries without running the car while at a festival or away from a power supply....he suggested a deep cell boat battery hooked up to a cigarette lighter power adapter, to an ac inverter...sounds like a pretty solid plan.  dave was super nice too.  he however wasn't too sure about powering the d3....but i have seen some stuff at sonicstudios that might work, and i'm also thinking about possibly building a battery pack myself...i know there's some info here on it.  anyone tried that, specifically for the d3?
oh yeah, and i found out that you can just record over a dat tape and don't have to erase it...neato :)

D3 is 6v same as D7/8 so anything that works for the D7/8 will work on the D3.  The power input I believe is a different size.  So you will need to get the proper cable from sony.  Or I know Paul at prodigital has the correct cable for the D3.  Building a pack is not that hard, but you will still need to get the proper sony cable or else hack apart your AC adapter.

I remember about 2 months ago someone on the oade board was looking for instructions on how to build a batt pack for a D7/8...I'll see if I can find it.

Also, I need advice on powering it.  What's the most economical way?  Why do I suddenly feel like a newbie?  ;)

I couldn't find that page in the Oade archive. It was really good to. It had pictures and all. I did snip this of an old dat-heads digest:

WHAT I DID:
        Bought a 4 C battery holder from Radio shack ($2 or so) and a 2 C
battery holder as well ($2 or so). I clumsily duct taped them back to back
to make them easy to carry ($.05 or so). I cut the yellow plug off of a
spare AC adapter I had (from a sony discman that fit the D3) and wired the
batteries in series,) to the plug. I tried to use a
male/female connector as recommended to me at first but I couldn't get a
reliable connection out of the cheap .99 cent radio shack parts. Are their
higher quality parts than those cheap white plastic ones? I would
eventually like a detatchable plug.
A little duct tape later over the soldering job (very sloppy) and
I had a little pack about 3" thick and about 5" long that would fit into a
sock for travel. Any suggestions as to how to make a cool case for it that
would allow easy battery access?
It worked! and it powered my D3 for about 7 hours of playback and
recording with the backlight off. After 5 hours, the low batery indicator
came on but it still played back for 2 more hours. I powered my discman
(same plug) for some 5 more hours cause it needed less juice than the DAT.
So 30 minutes labor and $10 parts makes a battery pack that lasts for 7-8
hours. Take that Sony!

there's probably better info out there...if the d3/7/8 are all the same power requirements...I found a couple of sites dedicated to powering the d7/8. simple google search using:
d7 battery pack
