Topic: Looking to upgrade either mics or recorder.

What I currently run is  Franken Nak 300's > Bmp2+ UA-5 > Iriver

What I want to do is either upgrade the mics or consolidate into an all-in-one box.

I do enjoy the sound of my mics and they have pulled some great tapes.  What would be the next logical step?

if you like your mics, then move on to an "all in one".
you'll be upgrading the preamp (perhaps) and that will change the flavor.

I have an Oade BCM  Marantz PMD 671 and love it...it has 24 bit recording which the 660 doesn't have among other settings...it is quite a bit more expensive than the 660, but has a lot of key features which will keep it up to date for quite a while...hopefully!

Its a busman mod.  I currently do not do any 24bit recordings (obviously) but I also don't really have the urge to do so....maybe in the future...

I ran a V3 a fews times behind my mics, deciding if I wanted to upgrade the mics or pre/ad. I personally decided I needed to upgrade my mics first. (I liked the 391's well enough, the 393's were too bright for me). It sounded better then my regular setup no matter how you slice it. In any event I liked the sound of other mics>BM2P+UA5 better then the pre-ad upgrade with my existing mics.

The single box solution is apealing though.

Guess it depends on if you want different mics or a different pre/ad/recording solution. Sounds like you want the latter, and everyone seemes to agree, I decided in my limited experience that I wanted to move the other direction and upgrade the mics before the pre/ad.

I guess it all depends on what/how you tape though.
