Old Taper - New Equipment?
« on: July 11, 2014, 03:09:55 PM »
Old taper here, 20+ years, DAT, MD, cassette and currently an LS10. Want to upgrade, mics, battery box and new rig, want to get your thoughts on what the best option under $500 would be. Did not see a thread here about full set ups, but see a ton of new equipment. Looking to tape very loud, shed/arena rock shows. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Not sure on exact US$ prices, but you won't be too far out on $500 with Sony M10, and Church Audio CA-11 omni and card caps (or CA-14) and ugly battery box. Check the Retail page on TS for Church's latest offers, there's usually some sort of package deal on for mics and battery box or preamp.

Thanks guys. I typically hit all the sheds across the state, KISS shows specifically in the next few weeks.

KISS went taper-friendly?
Why not look for a recent used Marantz in the yard sale and ask the band for a board patch?

^ I think he's  >:D

I'd strongly suggest, if the OP wants to be using the mics this summer, buying these from darktrain in the YS: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=168986.0 Robb is a standup guy, does great work, and will get them to you soon. A new build of CA mics is not going to be ready by summer's end, I wouldn't think. You said you'll be in big sheds, probably not that close up (I'm assuming) so some low-profile hypers might do the trick. They'll be a little thin, but it's KISS... there should be lots of bass.

All you'd need is the mics above, a cheap battery box, and a recorder.

Also, I've got an extra Church Audio CA-9200 pre-amp I'd be willing to part with if you want the additional flexibility and a set of CA-14 cardioids.  pm me if interested in either. I could ship them out immediately

Thanks all. I have an LS-10, I would imagine that is still a viable recorder for this type of set up, yes? With that I guess a battery box is still required?

AcidJack, thanks, what sort of mounting options are available for those? They look good and I know these provide quality sound.

There are clips you can buy from Sound Professionals, but honestly, I think some simple tape on glasses is the best and what I'd use.

I had the LS-10. It's a nicely made recorder, but it does roll off the low end when you use the mic input. If you want to stay with that recorder, consider getting a preamp instead of a battery box and go line in to avoid the roll off. Here's a review with some of the details:

Thanks folks, the preamp option seems like something I may want to dig into.
