Best Portable Headphone Amp For Under 200$
« on: April 03, 2004, 10:27:01 PM »
Any suggestions?  I'd like to keep it in the $150-200 range... something I can use with my iPod and E3s and at home with my new Grado 125s I just bought.

Definitely try headphone.com and you can always try the DIY route, some people on head-fi.org build amps that appear to be very professional and sound great.  Prices vary of course  ;)

Well I cancelled the order for my SR125s and upgraded to the 225s.  I have a CMoy amp at the moment... will this be OK to power the 225s?  I'll be listening mostly from the headphone jack on my laptop and the CMoy which has an enhanced bass boost circuit in it.  I also just ordered a pair of Shure E3s, do I really even need the CMoy for these if I'm just going to be using them with my iPod?

Also, I listen to a wide variety of music... jazz, blues, rock, country, folk, funk, reggae... will this have any effect on which amp I want?

try asking your question on head-fi.org, you'll probably get more response there.

The cmoy will do ok with the Grado's i imagine, but i know there's some amps out there that mate extremely well with Grado's.  Maybe it's time for you to upgrade to a new DIY amp.  Like everyone else has pointed out, try www.head-fi.org

Register and check out the DIY forum, i imagine you should have an easy time contacting some head-fier like JMT to critique an amp for the Grado's.

Have you checked out any of the Xin Amps?

His new one should be out shortly and it has really good reviews from the beta testers.

I recently received a superdual beta from Dr. Xin of www.fixup.net and all I can say is wait til it comes out!!! This thing is awesome!  The detail that can be heard with this amp is amazing!!  It about the size of a matchbox (no joke!) but it blows my Cmoy amp outta the water!

I'd go with a JMT built META42 amplifier.
