Title: D8 FF, WTF?
Post by: jessedscott on June 24, 2003, 12:05:25 PM
Sometimes my D8 will not FF, says it is BLANK? But there is music on the tape. Anyway around this. If I had made track marks /write would this help?

mine will do that also with new tapes....its just telling you the tape is blank and is wondering why you want to fast forward it...this will also happen when you have a lot of space at the beginning of a used tape, it thinks its blank and wonders why you want to fast forward it.

yes, you can, when you hit FF, it will go for like 10secs and then stop. at 7 or 8 secs, hold down the FF and it will not stop and say blank, if it does, keep holding down the FF and it will listen, it is like a bitch, you gotta let em know what you want!

I also found that hitting play for a little bit, then hitting FF gets past this also.

Cool info.  I actually thought something was wrong with mine.  Guess not...cool.  Does everybody FF and Rewind their tapes before using them?

Kev it is a good idea to "UNPACK" your new tapes as I call it. I thinkl it gives them a little bit of a "USED" feeling to the deck, easier to record on. I have had new tapes that I did not FF/RW that got fucked on the LOADING. ALSO , I always do this before I leave the house, with the wallwert, saves batteries and time!

Funny, my buddy who told me to do this called it packing the tape.

I don't think I'd be ff and rw on a d8 that much. fastest way to kill your deck.

I do it, but I use my home decks instead. Much faster and less wear and tear on the portable. Of course, this ain't much use if you don't have a home deck...one thing Doug Oade mentioned a while ago is that he gives the hubs a little tweak by hand to take up any slack, which is the main cause of chomped tapes. I think it's a happy medium between the two if you don't have a home deck...

hmmmm..this happens with every tape I use no matter what the brand, only when they are either blank, or there is a long gap the beginning of the tape.

hey creek, it sounds like your deck needs an adjustment, how long since you serviced it? i sent mine in at ~500hours. i just got mine back from service(prodigital) before bonnaroo and i had no problems there at all.

speaking of service.....what does it cost to get the d8 cleaned and what not at oade?  im thinking mine's due for a check up!  seeing as how i've never had one done on it, however, i do use those cleaning tapes.

I didn't think that Oade cleaned DATs. Do they? I called Pro digital and they said it would be about $75.00 for the service...about $85.00 or so with shipping/tax.
