Ahhh, the convoluted path we travel...
« on: February 15, 2008, 07:55:17 PM »
I know that most of you just buy a single pair of mics, use them, and never think about other mics, but there are a few of us who have been through 2 or 3 (okay, maybe even more than 3) pairs of different mics and setups, just because we are made out of money and love wasting it on endless new mics, preamps, etc.  so, i thought i might start a thread about our histories of buying mics, and the convoluted path to where we are now.

my path:
royer r121 ribbons and a pair of akg c1000s.  sold em.
coles 4038s, neumann tlm103s (acckkk!!) and km184s.  sold em
rode nt5s and rode NTKs. sold em
akg c391bs and at4051s.  sold em.
more km184s.  sold em.
akg c481s.  kept them
dpa 4061s. sold em
schoeps cmc64s.  sold them and the 481s for...
DPA 4011s.  sold em.
more km184s. sold em
back to akg 481s.  and a pair of 391bs.  sold em
pair of at4041s and shinybox 46 ribbons.  sold em
more 481s and a pair of 461s.
another pair of 391bs.
pair of naiants to play with - gave em away here on tapers.
another pair of at4051s
sold the 481s and 461s.
pair of at4050s.

dang, i know i am forgetting several other mics i have had, but i am not exactly thinking clearly right at this moment...in retrospect, i have liked pretty much all of those mics except the tlm103s and the nt5s.  best bang for buck mics have been the c391b, C481s, and AT4051s.

since i am not a preamp slut, i had a millennia media HV3D for most of that time.  sold it.

so then, have you ever owned more than one pair of mics?????

Didn't we play this game before?

1985-1987 Radio Shack PZM (lost 'em)
   -13 years pass-
2000-2003 CSB with Batt box/lo cut switch (sold 'em)
2000-2004 Nakamichi CM301,2,3,4 (sold 'em all)
2002-2003 Nakamichi CM701 (sold 'em)
2003-       DPA 4061
2004-2005 AKG C481,3 (sold 'em)
2005-2006 CSB with Batt batt box/lo cut switch (sold 'em)
2005-       Neumann KM140 actives (sold the LC3KAs and picked up AK50s and LC3 with lemo ends 2006-7)
2005-       Schoeps mk4v, mk21, mk41 (picked up 41s 8/2007 and sold the 21s 11/2007)
2008-       Schoeps mk8

2000-2004 Nakamichi MX100
2003-2006 Sonosax SXM2
2005-       Sonosax SXM2/LS2
2005-       Schoeps vms02ib
2006-       Schoeps vst62iug
2003-       SONY Oade mod SBM-1
2005-       Edirol Oade T+mod UA-5
2006-2007 Edirol Oade W+mod UA-5

Neumann KM140s are gettin sold this month to chucky.  Keeping the AK50s and the LC3 lemos, the moe show I did 4-22-2007 on archive is probably one of the best recording I have made of a jamband.

1983 Tascam PE 120s   sold them in 1984
1984 Sennheiser MD 421s   sold them in 1991(DAMMIT!)
1988 AKG 451E/ck1&2s   BORROWED until 1990 but got to keep the ck2s
1990 AKG 451EB/ck1s   still own them but had Land Audio refurbish them in 2007
1994 CSBs traded to a TECH buddy in exchange for his AKG ck2s
2006 AKG 414B-XLS/ST   still own them
2007 AKG ck8s   bought from TWOODRUFF
2007 sold ck2s to intpseeker

I have owned 4 Sony D6s  1983 to 1985 Sony kept replacing the Piece Of Shits
3 Sony D5s 1985 to   still own 1 but it doesn't work
1 Teac DA-P20  1993 to 1997
1 Sony D7  1994 to 1998
1 Tascam DA-P1  1997 to 2007  sold to ero3030
1 Sony D8  1998 to 2007  sold to an old taping buddy
1 Tascam HD-P2  2006 to PRESENT

1 Oade Warm UA-5  2004 to 2005 sold in YS but can't recall the buyer
1 Lunatec V3  2005 to PRESENT

not really changing that much over the years
those Sennheiser MD 421s would be worth alot more now than when I sold them

Well, I just started open taping last year with SP C4 and pretty snatched up some KM 184's from the Yard Sale last year and I can see myself sticking with them for the long haul.

crikey - bunch of nice stuff everybody!  it does appear that we are all made out of money, and apparently have no other obligations, like fix the house or car, or buying momma some new shoes...

Lemme see.

ATR35s (don't laugh): 2004, still have
SP-CMC-2: 2004, still have
Studio Projects C4s: 2006, still have
MBHO 603s/KA 200 Ns: 2006, sold to some fellow in Spain in 2007
Neumann KM184s: 2007, sold to pmonk66 in 2007
Oktava MK012s: 2007, still have

I haven't done nearly enough with microphones as you folks have. I don't plan on using the ATR35s ever again, although it is responsible for some near and dear recordings (the minidisc recorder it was used with, however, has left me bitter and spiteful to that technology). I don't know if I'll ever use the SP-CMC-2 again because one of the clips is missing and one capsule is louder than the other. A shame, it did some very good work. The C4s are probably going to stay around forever but not see much use. They're kind of banged up cosmetically, too, so I don't think I could sell them even if I wanted to. There was a beautiful period where I went all slutty and picked up MBHOs AND Neumanns. But money problems reared its ugly head and they had to be sold. A shame because I never got to use either set to their full potential. But I'm glad pmonk is putting the Neumanns to good use. I'll probably keep the Oktavas forever. They get a good sound, I got them modded, and they can be used for music and film/video work.

Once I win the lottery, though, I'm buying everything.
Mics: DSP mod Oktava MK012s, CAD E100S (2), Studio Projects C4s, SP-CMC-2, Polsen OLM-20

hey dennis - now, that's just not right, starting out with schoeps.  where's your learning curve, eh?  going straight from noob to slut in one fell swoop.  youre supposed to start out with nak300s, then SP c4s, then km184s, m300s, 4061s, 481s, THEN you get schoeps and then dpa 4011s.  THEN you go back to 481s, then m295s with nickel capsules, then vintage km84s, and then brauner vh1-khe's or manley ref golds.  then you decide its been your crappy converters all along that were holding you back...

this is cool, like a competition for who's the biggest mic slut.  so far, it is either john w or muj...
i rank a sad 4th or 5th... i need a soundfield and some m50s, maybe couple of short body u47s, or ela-m251s...

It is not a competition, just a confession.

OK, I won't list my history, I can't even remember.

But I did look over at my bookshelf the other night and notice six different baseball caps, each one with a different set of mics lovingly attached (with black hot melt glue).  Here they are:
- Sennheiser MKE2 (omni)
- Sennheiser KE4-211-2 (omni)
- Sennheiser MKE40 (lav clips, not glue) (cardioid)
- DPA 4060
- Knowles Acoustics BT1759 (omni)
- Nevaton MKE40 (omni)

Last night I tried out four of these to compare, my search for the "perfect omni" mic.  It goes like this: Put hat on, plug mics into recorder (minidisc, mic in, plug in power, PCM recording), drink some beer, speak to identify mics, come upstairs, announce mics to wife, listen for response, announce mics to dog, enter bathroom, wash hands, flush toilet, enter kitchen, get glass from cupboard, pause in front of cookoo clock, try a "rain stick" in front of mics, go to garage, get another beer, return to house, return to basement, finish beer.  Repeat.

Oh yeah, I think I have at least one set of glasses with mics crazy glued on the sides, and a couple of sets of headphones with AT853 series mics on them.

I'm presently in a stomach-knotted state of flux regarding my microphone homeostasis.
I might purchase a few more of those inexpensive transducers that we use ;)

For what you typically record Moke, do not underestimate the AKG c45_ with the ck22 or ck2 omni capsules.  Though vintage and only available used, they are fantastic sounding SD omnis.  Hit me up to use mine (or to join you) next time you're in San Diego for a show.  I have three and have been itching to try a decca tree set up... >:D

1984-1986 TCD5M (borrowed mics: Beyer M160s, Beyer M88s, Nak CM100/300s)

1987-1990 replaced first worn out D5 with another one, Nak 100s w/CP1 and CP4

1990-1994 Nak 300 tri-mic kit, w/CP1,CP2,CP4 & MX100

1994-present AKG460s with CK61, CK63, and A60/CK8 (sold the guns in 2002 after sitting unused for 8 years)

It's nice when you hit the mics that sound just right to your ears and keep them for 14 years!

Here's a "data point" from a little over 35 years ago. This picture shows me carrying my equipment after recording a Bach Cantata performance at Emmanuel Church in Boston: a Tandberg quarter-track open-reel recorder (in the large gray case) and a pair of "Advent" cardioid microphones (Beyer Dynamic M 81s, actually).

The open-reel machine was my first upgrade; its predecessor was an Advent 201 cassette deck. Soon I got better microphones (Sony ECM-22P electrets--as bright and harsh as the Beyers had been dull), added Dolby "B" processing, then got better microphones again (AKG C 451s), then a better recorder (a Revox with the Dolby circuit built in), then even better microphones (Neumann KM 80 series) ... and the chase was on.

Strangely, the nice young violinist in the picture is now in her late fifties. (Oops--so am I!)

I'm a relative newbie... I dabbled in taping my buddy's bar band, but didn't go nuts and start spending money like water and taping real bands until a year or two ago.

circa y2k - Cheap radio shack stereo mic (at822 looking things) > Technics AC powered cassette deck. gave away
circa 2001 - Borrowed AT electret Omnis >  Harmon kardon AC powered deck. returned
circa 2003 - better cheap radio shack stereo mic.
2004 - Nak CM100 bodies with mismatch CM300 attenuators which never put out a decent signal
2004-2006 period of deep depression because what I had didn't work right
2006 - set of 3 nak CM-300s (sold)
2007 - Nak CM300 bodies to go with my CM300 attenuators (problem fixed!) (currently for sale)
2007 - AT-853s, LSD2, CA cards, Nak CP4's. (still have)
2008 - Peluso CEMC6's, Senn ME66's, Earthworks SR-77's. (waiting for the mailman, literally)

ugh....

in no order or time frame:
mics:
AT 853s (several pairs over the years, with every cap)
audix mc1290hc
MBHO 603a ka200n / 800
Neumann skm140 kits x 3 (d'oh!)
AKG "Hairy" binaural head
SASS stereo mic from crown.
AKG c480's, jwm460's, ck61,2,3 caps (not all mine, but used plenty).
Soundfield ST-250
T.H.E. KR200a modular system w/card and hyper caps.
Peluso P stereo
Peluso CEMC6 kit
AKG c422
Beyer MC930
Oktava MC012's all caps
DPA 4060's / 4071s (wish I still had those)
CHURCH audio mod 853s.
Studio Projects LSD2, versions 1 & 2
I know there are more...but that is all I can come up with out of my memory.
borrowed gear...an equally long list.

decks, all of them sans SD7xx / Tascam HDP2 / some of the newere hand helds.

Favorites ?
ST250>V3 was pretty bomber.  made a lot of good (GREAT) recording w/that rig.
LSD2>ACM660 was pretty magical sounding to me.
and i'm currently really enjoying the Beyers.

Got the itch to record concerts back in 1994...
1994  $30 cassette recorder with built in mic...used for two shows...completely unintelligible results.

Scratched the itch with a basic rig, until moving away from the city in '98, so got out of the game in '98.
1994 – 1998 Core Sound Binaurals Mics
1994 – 1998  Sony D7 Recorder
1997 – 1998  Sony D8 Recorder (second DAT recorder for DAT transfers)
***All sold in '98 or so

After moving back to town 5 years later, decided to sneak back in on low end...happy recording like this for next four years.
2003 – 5/07  AT-853 (SP-CMC-4) Mics
2003 – 2005  Sony MD Recorder
2005 – 5/2007  Sony NHF800 Hi-MD Recorder
***All sold after deciding to move to a higher end rig.

New job assignment last year and extra income gave me the itch for a higher end rig...and so the search began whereupon I've been slutting it up in a major way for the last year.  All of the gear indicated below has been sold except for the current gear that I own, which is indicated with an asterisk at the end of this list.
3/07 – 7/07  MBHO 603a / KM200 mics
4/07 – 6/07  SD MP-2 preamp
4/07 – 6/07  Edirol R-09 Recorder
4/07 – 8/07  Busman Mod UA-5
5/07 – 8/07  Oade W-Mod UA-5
5/07 – 8/07  Microtrack 24/96
6/07 – 10/07  Busman PMD-660 all-in-one preamp/recorder
6/07 – 7/07  MBHO KM500 capsules
7/07 – 11/07  Neumann KM184 mics
7/07 – 11/07  AKG-C480B / CK61 mics/capsules
8/07 – 12/07  CK63 capsules
11/07 – 12/07  Oade WCM Fostex FR2LE all-in-one preamp/recorder
11/07 – 12/07  CK62 capsules
11/07 – 12/07  MK46 active cables
11/07 – 12/07  JWModC460B mic bodies
*12/07 – present  SD-702 all-in-one preamp/recorder
12/07  CK1X capsules, battery box and cables for stealth rig
12/07 – 1/07  Milab VM-44 Link mics
*12/07 – present  Neumann KM100, LC3 cables, AK40 capsules
*2/07 – present  Oade M148 preamp
*2/07 – present  Neumann AK50 capsules
prepaid and soon to own - Aerco MP-2 preamp

Yes...tape trading was another sign of my total lack of control when it comes to my hobbies.  I used to go to Sams and buy megaboxes of XLII cassettes and send them out a box at a time...and of course receive a box at a time back from someone.  In the heyday, I'd get three and four packages a day.

Then DAT came along and broke my friggin' back because at $3 a tape, I couldn't afford all the shows that I traded for, but of course the fact that I didn't have the money was no deterrent...I did it anyway!!!

BTW, feel free to start adding to it again - it is a true testament to what people actually have tried and found wanting, and what they moved to from there.

Really easy for me.

1998: Core Sound Binaurals (sold last year)
2001: AKG 391, 393 (sold in 2003)
2002: Microtech Gefell M210 (added m27 omni capsules in 2004)
2008: Sonic Studios DSM-6S/L (added for stealthing)
dpa 4061 > Church Audio 9200 > Sony PCM-D50 (Moon Audio Silver Dragon v3 interconnect)

This is fun  :) only I can't remember all the years:

early 80's: some crazy combinations of mics and recorders, including a shure 57 plugged into what I think was one of those recorders that were meant to attach to a computer to save data?

mid 80's: a crazy radioshack mic with two caps that split into a Y and my first real deck: a Marantz PMD 420 (still have it..it still works even though it still changes speeds all the time completely randomly) then some CSB action (bought from an ad in Relix) and a Sony Pro D6 bought on a road trip to NYC (which never really worked out well and cost me a fortune sending to Canadian Sony repairs  :( )

then at some point a D7 and and PCM-M1 and SoundPros CMC8 and years of patching

then a few years after the birth of my son and my return to tape-ville...Franken Nak CM300s, Oade Mod ACM Marantz PMD 660, Beyerdynamic MC930, Pelusos, Milab vm44link, Grace V3, Busman BCC-1, Sony D50...and that is today-ish

next stop is....

cb

Busman BCS1, Busman BSCS-L, DPA 4023, Neumann KM 184, KM 183
Lunatec V3, Naiant Midbox
Oade ACM Marantz PMD 661, Sony D50, Tascam DR680
+ lotsa darktrain cables :-)
