I don't really know how long it will run in total, but I tried mics > BB > recorder at 16/44.1 with an 8 GB microSD, plus the built-in memory, on 2700 mAh batteries.  It went until the memory was full…Almost 19 hours (18h46m) and I still had a couple of bars.  That was with the backlight (and LEDs) on continuously.

Personaly, I have found somewhere between 3 and 4 to be a good place with respect to levels...YMMV and all...

Hey RobC,

you know what you should do for setting the level?

Get you're preamp setup in advance (what are you recording? Concerts?) so it is optimised for the level of input signal, then get your machine in record and expose your rig to the loudest material you can find. Have you got a kick-ass stereo in the house?

Set the level on the M10 accordingly. It's all about gain structure; one effects the other. Does your preamp (V2?) have signal indication?

i've run my M-10 with the level set between 3.5 and 6.  i tend to get better results at the lower setting with more gain being provided by the external pre (i use an Aerco MP-2 or CA-9100 depending on the mics).

^^ Tend to agree; I don't know whether 6  is the "unity" or not but I feel like when I've gone up to 6 and above the M10 starts adding some hiss (at quiet shows) and unwanted crispiness on the highs.  We all like the little machine, but it's still just a $200 consumer machine...

I will try 4 to start

30 hours is nice,  doing an entire festival with a few AAs will surely lighten the load

I always run mine at 4.5 and received satisfactory results.   Picked 4.5 since there were so many opinions on whether 4 or 5 was unity.
