Title: "BINAURAL" MICROPHONES DO NOT EXIST
Post by: zhianosatch on June 09, 2004, 04:14:26 PM
"Binaural" is a recording technique that employs omnidirectional microphones to recreate human hearing.
Anyone who uses the word "binaural" to describe a microphone or microphones is dead wrong, including retailers. :)

"BINAURAL" MICROPHONES DO EXIST   :flipa:

Kind of... It's not a pattern, but the mic IS a friggin head.  Neumann Model KU 100

I consider Neumann a reputable microphone manufacturer.

I thought to myself... "That's not a binaural mic, it's mic capsules (assuming omni) in an overpriced plastic head, glued in only for  recording using the binaural technique"  ^-^

With the Neumann binaural mic/head/thing, you can probably accomplish that wax-in-the ear binaural sound quite effectively.  Talk about realism.  ::)

The neumann head is equipped with circuitry that "decodes" the binaural information for use in standard stereo playback.

David Lindley released an "official bootleg" recording from Japan that is recorded with the neu. head. Its a great recording!

Hmm, sounds interesting.  If they fitted the thing with the circuitry, you'd think that process could be applied after the fact.  Does it have any charactaristics different than other live recordings m0ke? Sense of 3d space/realism?

This is the foam head I prefer when using the binaural technique:

I've been thinking of making one that has a secret compartment inside the head to stash a recorder. Let's see security figure that out.  Especially if I affix it to a blow-up doll and buy her a seat and some drinks.

Buy a blow-up man, they'll probably ask less questions.
