can i salvage or play it back in different players with better results?

It may have been recorded with the dropouts at the crinkle, or may have crinkled after being encoded, so you may try fast forwarding and rewinding to try and straighten out the imperfections of the base material, and hope you can get it across the heads making even contact.  But, you're on thin ice.
