Powering the sd702?
« on: May 16, 2015, 12:38:10 PM »
Not finding the definitive thread, if someone could point me there.....

Just considering a 702, but wanted to get the full powering scoop first. Is the internal worthless? Does a standard dvd battery work?

People use "L" type camcorder batteries as well as externals using the Hirose connector to whatever they've got.  The externals need to output 12V.  The L batteries are 7.2V.  You can also make a "dummy" cell and wire that up to RC 7.2V battery packs as well.

I just picked up a pair of these; they're 7800 mAh.  Road testing them this week, but appear to get good reviews, and they're half as much as Sonys.

Another option for the L-series battery replacement is the Lenmar LIS970P. I've had my 722 since initial release and have had great success with the Lenmar brand. They've always proven to be super-reliable.

I notice the Lenmar has a three year warranty vs only one year for the Watson.  Plus it's cheaper.  Looks like Lenmar is the better deal.

Thanks!

Do I need a power cable other than what comes in the 722 box to use the Lenmar battery?

This battery slides into the back of the unit.  No cables.

Definitely a nice deal on the Lenmar. I especially like the dual bay charger:

I only use these batteries in my 702. Never saw a reason to go external or dummy battery.

Stay away from these batteries.  I got one good and two bad.

Again, I suggest the Lenmar LIS970P. As long as you don't deeply discharge them regularly, 2 of them should get you through a typical day of festival recording 2 chan w/ +48 and meters on full during daylight gradually turning down brightness as sunlight wanes. Although I usually carry a 3rd as a safety and change 'em more often than I should to avoid discharging too deeply and extending overall battery longevity...

Have a 2nd set x3 charged for day 2 while the 1st set of 3 are charging. Lather, rinse, repeat.

FYI, I'm running a 722 recording to HDD+CF @ 24/48 and transfer from CF>card reader>PC and have *never* had the 722 fuck up where I need to transfer from HDD (other than human error). But it sure is nice to have a safety copy.

Battery life is much better when running just to CF and not powering the HDD in the 722. I'm just a paranoid freak and like having the safety track...

wasabi 8500 mah battery for $39.99 with free shipping.  Good reviews on Amazon.  There's also a two battery and charger deal for $84.00.

I haven't personally used this battery, however.

Again, I suggest the Lenmar LIS970P.

That's what I got as a replacement.  Seems solid.

I've always been curious why the internal battery is 7.2v but the hirose connection is 10-18v?  Why is that?

I'm curious about this as well.
Not only why the batteries are 7.2V and they hirose is 10-18v, but why the 8V range? Will the unit work equally as well on 10V vs. 18V?
