for board/mic mixes, 4 track recorder or 2 M-10?
« on: September 04, 2016, 07:54:43 AM »
So I have a Sony M-10 now and CA-14 mics right now that I use to record rock shows, but I'd like to add the capability to record from the board as well as mics and mix afterwards.  Would I be better off with a 4 track recorder such as the R-44, or 70D or just get a second M-10 while they still can be had and use 2 machines for the process.  Seems like that's a bit kludgy but would work.

Just get the 70D.  It is less expensive than another M10 and you won't have the issue of having to sync two separate recordings in post.

^ Yeah get the 70D. It's great to not have to line up the sources after, and you will have to even with the same recorder. The only thing is that the 70D is bigger, so if you plan on any stealth it won't work for that.
Mics: Nak CM-300s, Nak CM-100s, CP-1s, CP-2s, AT-853s(Cards, Hypers, Omnis) CA-14s(Cards, Omnis)

I'm not planning on using this for stealth, it'll only be for open recording.  But can the CA14 be used with the 70D simply?  I will not have money to get different mics for a while, but I expect to have an opportunity to use a 4 track recorder before the end of the month.  I thought I saw something that said that the cam/Mic in port volume can't be adjusted while recording?

I would take a look at the R-44 if you have the extra coin. They are rock solid recorders and have recently been popping up on eBay for $400-500. As the others have mentioned time syncing sbd and audio tracks in post from two different sources is a major PIA.

I think that refers to issues with the camera pass through audio - the 70D has knobs for input level control.

Assuming you have some sort of battery box or preamp with the CA mics - you'll want to use the 1/8 input @ EXT IN 1/2

While a four-track recorder will obviously save you time in aligning sources in post, I wouldn't necessarily rule out using two M10s. Separate recorders give you flexibility in terms of placement, without having to worry about running cables all over — plus, you then have a backup recorder for simple two-track situations.

Of course, this depends on how much of a PITA you find adjusting pitch/tempo to be. It's absolutely true that even two otherwise identical M10s will run at slightly different speeds.

The 1\8 input mic input is adjustable with no problem on the 70d except that there are separate gain controls for each mic.  The 60d has a ganged control for the 1\8 input on it so it is a bit easier to use when inputting a stereo signal.  The 60d was on sale for about $129 a month or so ago.  But the 70d is certainly a good option if you use an approved card in it.

the CA 14 has a 1/8 stereo connector.  Will the 1/8 connector give me two channels, or is it going to compress that stereo signal in to one channel?

You will get two channels.

OK Thanks all, looks like the 70D, with all its warts, will be the way to go.

70d is good and all but what happens if something goes wrong with your 70d? With 2 PCM-M10s, if one of them fails, you will atleast have the other running. I also carry a backup recorder just in case. Yesterday I had trouble with something and I figured out it was a cable, thank god I had a spare cable or else I would be screwed! Always carry extra everything, battery, cable, sd card, mic, recorder etc

If the 70D fails he still has the M10!

If the 70D fails so bad that it takes out the M10 - he probably has bigger problems!!

Tascam Dr-680 would give you some extra channels in case you want to run a pair of mics on stage. And you can get them cheap these days.
Mics: AT4051, AT4053, KM140, AKG C414, Beyerdynamic MEM86 guns, Nak cm300, AT853 4.7mod
Pre: V3, CA-9100
Recorders: Busman DR-680, iRivers, minidisc, jb3, and DAT

If the OP just needs 4 channels, the 70d is a respectable choice and it can be easily powered  for hours with commonly available and inexpensive 5v external cell phone batteries.

680 is still a contender if more than 4 channels are needed.
