Best modern recording equipment?
« on: February 19, 2018, 12:24:57 PM »
I've been taping since 2000 and have been a little less active in the last couple years.  I'm going through my old equipment drawer and will probably have some things for sale at some point.

1.  What are people replacing their Sound Devices 722 with?  I'm finding the firewire to be annoying (the computer I had with firewire was replaced years ago) and using the CF card can also be annoying.

2.  Is the Lunatec V3 still the best out there for pre / A/D ?

3.  I am still pretty happy with my KM140 and KM184, so I think I'm good there.

Secondarily I still have an MP-2 & Oade modsbm-1 that I've always loved and can't seem to get rid of.
Mics:  Neumann SKM-140, Neumann SKM-184
Pres:  Lunatec V3, Sound Devices MP-2
A/D:  Oade Mod Sony SBM-1
Recorder:  Sound Devices 722, Nomad JB3

Around here, probably MixPre-3 or -6.

Well, if you're looking for an upgrade and a Nagra VI seems too been-there-done that, there's always this:

Or if you can get by with only 16 channels:

I've been taping since 2000 and have been a little less active in the last couple years.  I'm going through my old equipment drawer and will probably have some things for sale at some point.

1.  What are people replacing their Sound Devices 722 with?  I'm finding the firewire to be annoying (the computer I had with firewire was replaced years ago) and using the CF card can also be annoying.

Lots of people seem to have moved to multi-channel rigs.  Its not uncommon to see 4 channel recorders (or more).  See the 744 and 788.

2.  Is the Lunatec V3 still the best out there for pre / A/D ?

Oh yeah, its the only one still around b/c it works great.  But it seems the opinion of a lot of people are that the ADCs on a lot of newer recorders are adequate...

ETA.  There are a couple of Oade Moded V3s around...  Do some digging with the Search Function and you'll find it...

3.  I am still pretty happy with my KM140 and KM184, so I think I'm good there.

Good mics will always be good mics...

Secondarily I still have an MP-2 & Oade modsbm-1 that I've always loved and can't seem to get rid of.

Keep them.  One day there may be a reason to bust them out...  You may never use them again, but you'll always regret selling them...

My worthless ramblings...

I wonder if you could get away with using one of these in your 722
https://www.amazon.com/Eye-Fi-Compact-Adapter-Professional-Digital/dp/B001DKO7R8

Other than that I think you still have a smokin' rig. I personally think your mics make your rig what it is... I have always wanted a pair of km184's, so if you as me you are set!

Do you want the option to run more than 2 channels? If not I would:

1. Sell everything except the KM140's.
2. Buy a MixPre-3.
3. Use the remaining money on concert tickets.

If you have the option to get SBD patches on occasion I'd sell everything noted above and get a MixPre-6. With the MixPre-6 option you could also run 4 mics. I'd say hold on to the KM184's, but they are so similar to the KM140's that I'd say sell the 184's and get something else (maybe something with options to run different caps).

Even with the MixPre-3 I think you can take a mono SBD feed to mix with your mics.

Mics -> MP2 -> Flash recorder, line in.

I love the Sony M10, batteries last forever.
For insanely low noise floor get Sony D100.

Oops.  Quoting myself.

You've already got Sound Devices 722, so that is still state of the art, ...

My rec.? Keep the 722 it's still really easy to power and sounds amazing, IMHO. Record to CF and dump the contents via a USB reader.

And as far as the Grace sound goes I really see no reason to upgrade...

Only reasons I can think to "upgrade" your rig is the following:

1. You've got the "itch"
2. You want to slim down the gear bag
3. You want a stealth rig
