Microphone upgrade
« on: November 28, 2016, 08:37:19 PM »
I'm thinking about trying different mics when I get the money to do so.  Right now I'm using Busman BSC1.  Any matched pair sets you recommend?

Under $2000.  I don't have the money now, would need to save for them.

Maybe Neumann 184 will be the winner, but I'm going to continue looking and need to get the money saved.

Take a look at the Telefunken FET m60's as well.  You could make an initial investment to get bodies and a pair of capsules and then add additional capsules later if desired.
mics: Joly Modded Oktava MK-012MSP, Telefunken M60 stereo set, Neumann ak40, ak43, or ak50 > Nick mod lc3 > Naiant PFA or km100
Pres: Sound Devices 442, Sound Devices MP-2, Grace Lunatec V3
Recorders: Zoom F8, Tascam DR-60Dmkii, Zoom F4, SD788t

get my vote!

These are right around your budget and I don't think I've ever seen a pair of DPA 402x's at this price before. In addition to the quality of the mics, they are really compact so they are easy for travel and setup.

Line Audio cm3 + pair of Ted's chopped xlrs.  Great sound and almost as low profile as an active setup.  Take the extra $1,600 and spend it on a vacation or other toys.
Schoeps cmc6/4v / Line Audio CM3, OM1 / ADK A51 / Church Audio CA-14
Naiant Tinybox v2.2 / NBox(P) / Church Audio ST9200 / CA-UGLY
Sony PCM-M10 / Tascam DR-70D / Zoom F3 / Zoom F6

< $500
Superlux S241 mics are a good value ($130 each!), although they don't have matched pairs. However the Superlux S502 ORTF is two matched S241 caps in a Schoeps ripoff housing, by all accounts not too bad at all. You can find some A/Bs with the Schoeps MSTC 64G here on tapersection.
Line Audio CM3s and OM1s, both are an outstanding value (about $350/pair with shipping and customs fees) if you can find the importer, he lives in Canada.
$500 - $1000
I have a matched pair Beyerdynamic MC930s that sound really nice, and you can find them for $800. They don't get much attention on TS, but are an outstanding value. I like them almost as much as my Gefell M300s, which cost three times as much.
Oktava MC012's can still be obtained at reasonable prices if you only get the card caps. There are electronic mods (mainly replacing the capacitors) that are supposed to open up the mic
$1000 - $2000
Neumann KM184s are consistently good, about $1800 for a matched pair, but folks seem to either love them or hate them.
$2000 - $3000
Microtech Gefell M300s or SMS2000/M20(card) or M21(hyper) caps are very sensitive, accurate and musical, awesome for taping.
If you have money for more than one pair of mic, I would suggest getting some hypercardoid mics, or even a short shotgun, for bad sounding rooms. Sennheiser MKH8060/8070 mics are really tough to beat here, but are expensive - $3000+ for a pair.
> $3000 Sure you could drop a wad on Schoeps MK4Vs or DPAs, very nice mics, but it's not really necessary!! Too many other things are out of your control for live taping. This is from an an ex-Schoeps taper, used to have some CMC6/MK4s, really nice mics but I got paranoid everytime it threatened to rain. Speaking of which everyone needs some rain mics, see Superlux entry above :-P

My vote, too.  But I have to ask the OP:  what do you like / not like about your current Busman mics, whether physically or sonically?  The answer to that question may help others direct you one way or another.
