Quick easy way to attach an umbrella to a stand
« on: August 05, 2003, 02:17:02 PM »
I need one by saturday.  Anyone have any ideas about how to set one of these up with out spending a lot of money.  I really just need it for one day.  Or is should i just bring a clamp and clamp off someone with an umbrella.  Ideas?  Would duct tape work?

Are you kidding?  Use #1,252 = duct taping umbrellas to mic stands.  It'll definitely work.  I use a spare clamp with my umbrella, but have used duct tape before, too.  Already have the umbrella?

Im gonna recomend this one: http://makeashorterlink.com/?O34012085 . Don't let the clamp fool you though, your gonna have to duct tape it to your stand, clamp is useless on a mic stand. I like it because its pretty small, so its not too annoying in the air. Hope it helps.

At red rocks when I went to see panic it started to rain and I duct taped an unbrella to my stand and it worked perfectly.  Other suggestion would be to see if someone will let you put your mics under there umbrella.  One thing I would keep into consideration is the wind because it will definately make your stand go back in forth causing the sound to do the same, so you might want to hold your stand if it starts to do that ;) I had to do that a few times at panic.  I also know that people that left there stand alone the sound goes in and out (to the point where you can clearly hear it in the recording.  Hope this helps

The stroller umbrella from babies are us works perfect for me. Has a small clamp you can permanently attach to your stand to attach the umbrella to when needed.

REI makes some sweet umbrellas that clamp onto anything.  They are meant for beach chairs, but conveniently, they work for mic stands too!

yea man watch the wind... it migh be a good idea to get some lenths of rope, and some good tent stakes, and ancor it down.. at 10k lakes my stand fell over twice.... not cool, but atleast there was a poor sap that absorbed the fall... hope it wasn't anyone on the boards, if so, sorry man...  also, for a good umbrella, check at baby stores, they make some for strollers with a clamp on them, they work great.

I always secure my stand - stakes outdoors, duct tape indoors.  It's saved my stand and mics many-a-time from crashing to the ground due to w00ks being, well...w00ks.
