Looks like a bit of a upgrade over the HX20 and HX30. I've been holding off buying a new camera for a while. (I've been using a Fuiji JZ300 for almost two years)
I was about to pull the trigger on a HX20/30 but now think I'll hold out for the HX50...released May 21st.
Any thoughts? 8)

I have a HX9V that I love, and is nearly perfect for me, but that looks pretty upgrade worthy.
Love the hotshoe capabities and the 30x Zoom. I use mine a lot for video and would love a further, smoother zoom, the dial for exposure, and possible audio line in through the shoe.

that is a nice camera but the Panasonic FZ200 has the audio input and probably better low light performance

Wow! I think between these two cameras I'm gonna pull the trigger for an upgrade :-) Do you have any experience with the Optical Image Stabilization on the Panasonic and/or the Sony? Is it similar to the stabilization on the Sony HX9v? Thanks.

Ive owned 2 hx9v's and their stabilization is amazing, i would assume the hx50v is similar, no experience with the FZ200 but most cameras now adays have very good stabilization

I prefer the "less professional" look of the Sony. That Panasonic is nice for sure, but may get you a bit more noticed at the door. ESP when I am >:D all the audio gear as well.

Does this camera record video for more than 30 minutes at a time. I wouldn't mind starting to shoot video occasionally, but would prefer to clamp this to my stand and let it roll for the entire show.

Hopefully if there's a dedicated dial for it, you can. In the HX9V, it needed to be adjusted in the menu (couldn't do it while recording), but with its big brother, the HX100V, you could do it on the fly.

There was some talk stirring up a little over a year ago about the restriction possibly getting lifted, but don't think anything ever came of it. So, no. Still stuck with 30-minute limits on digicams.

no raw=why bother? Buy a Canon TS3 for the same money.

What was/is the reason for the 30 minute limit?
Seems sort of stupid. I'd love a small "do it all" camera for those times when I don't want to lug the DSLR around. Would have been great today. Went skiing with the DSLR to get some nice mountain shots. Hiked most of the day which is a royal PITA with a full size camera.
Ideally I'd like:
Small (semi-pocket sized)
Reasonable zoom (15x)
f2.0
1080p with ok low light performance with unlimited record time.
LINE IN audio
$500
Doesn't have to be great at anything.

Unlike old school videocams where the battery typically attached to the outside of the cam - thus making bigger batteries optional, pretty much all these small digital cameras have one-size-only internal battery compartments. And their batteries usually only go for around an hour. So even without the 30 minute time limit - you probably wouldn't be able to hit record and shoot video of the whole show.

i doubt its even possible to put that all in a pocket size camera
The closest to that is the panasonic FZ200 but its as big as a small dslr

The Panasonic FZ200 with f2.8 aperature thru the whole zoom range, mic input and 24x zoom is a better camera for concert shooting but it is bigger than a hx50v

Cool. Yes this would be great for bands that allow taping. Only 11 days till the HX50 is released!
Are any other companies coming out with something comparable this year? 30x zoom?

Canon sx50hs has 50x optical zoom and Canon sx500is has 30x.Fuji have some too

I normally wait until the price comes down (I'm cheap!) but may make an exception with this camera. The zoom and exposure on the fly settings and the stabilization (and small size) make this a great option for concert recording. I already have the 9v (thanks for the recommend shoestringsconcerts!) and am very happy with the video quality. In reading the literature (really blurbs) it sounded like the stabilization was different for this camera vs the 9v. Is this correct? If I do end up buying this cam, I will happily report back on the results using it.

No - I was just pointing out that you don't have to hit the menu button and scroll up, down, and all around looking for the exposure settings to make adjustments.

Good point. The dedicated EV dial implies that, but then again you would think that this would be a feature that Sony would explicitly state. From the little I have read so far from those that have purchased the cam, the stabilization is better than previous cams (like the hx9v) which is good if you are using a 30x zoom. Still may need to lay off the caffeine a bit :-)

I'm curious how sharp the picture will be if you're zoomed in all the way (using only optical zoom) from the cheap seats. Obviously, there are many external factors involved (lighting, smoke from fog machines, etc.).

Also would like to know if it is same as sony rx100 where in video mode you can set the shutter,apeture,and adjust the iso while recording..and if you can easily switch between auto focus and manual focus too.is there also focus peaking?

The EC dial on top is nice but you can not change while filming you must stop
adjust & restart filming and you can only set it in these modes:
P - Program
A - Aperture Priority
S- Shutter Priority
It remembers were you left it last so when you stop
and restart filming a few minutes later
you do not have to reset it.
I have found so far that once you are filming you can not change any settings
to anything else period. I'll keep playing. Just got it in an hour ago.

Well, now at least it remembers the EC settings when you turn it off/on... I really miss this on HX20.

I've just bought it and I'm disappointed by 1 thing, that I'm on P, A or S, even if I change the exposure just before filming, as soon as I press on " record" the exposure is always the same, that I'm on + 2 or - 2 , I see it changes on the image if I want to take a picture, but it doesn't change anything as soon as I film . Please do I miss something, or is infact exposure not settable on this device ??? thanx in advance

Are you saying if you change the exposure to -2, it stays at -2 while you're filming? Or are you saying that you set it at -2, and when you start filming the exposure level doesn't change? Or is it something else altogether?

Simply, exposure doesn't change on video mode, never, on any positions . Even if before filming I see the exposure effect on the screen when I scroll from -2 to +2, as soon as I film, it's like if all set up came back to exposure 0 . That I'm on - 2 or +2, on video mode, no effect .

Looks like it might need to be in "M" mode only. From the manual (Page 48)
M(Manual Exposure Shooting) - Allows you to shoot after adjusting the exposure manually (both the shutter speed and the aperture (F value)).

thanx for the idea but it does'nt work too ... that's ok for shooting photos, not for films . I think it's really impossible . I hope it's setted on the good exposure for concert by default !

I have shot shows with the HX50V and know that the exposure adjustment works - so if yours isn't working - I would try to take it back. It's a long shot - but maybe a firmware update my help?

good idea I will try this thanx . anyway in the manual I don't see it's possible , at least the french one . I've only 35 pages on the original manual and absolutly nothing on this, neither on the pdf version ....
edit : even firmware I don't understand how to change it lol ... argh this stuff makes me crazy . I love my hx9v so much, I'm disappointed . are you sure exposure has really change once you film ? I can see exposure change for pictures withotu problem, movie mode comes back to something " auto " and I've read on a test that yes it filmed with exposure and ISO automatic .... I want a proof lol .

well, after hours of searches on google, I give up ... really if someone can prove me he can film 2 times the same scene in a different exposure condition with hx50v, I would be very happy . We can set a SCN but not change the exposure manually for this function, I'm 99% sure of that lol !

well thanx but the goal is not to buy a real camera, but to have a great compact digicam to film , accepted by security ( I've other things to hide ... lol ) .
Anyway in intelligent mode auto and auto + I've discovered we can set the luminosity with the "down" button and it has effects on the video ! Not so bad ! I will try this at end of January on my next show . For exposure I'm now sure it's impossible .
