Questions about attenuator cables
« on: September 11, 2008, 10:46:40 AM »
I'd like to buy an 10db (or maybe 20?) attenuator to use with my camcorder.

I've made a research and found the following:

http://microphonemadness.com/products/mmatatcab.htm

http://www.core-sound.com/attenuator-cables/1.php

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-ATEN-1

Someone said at other topic that the SP one is just a piece of shit, so I don't know.

Would the Microtrack 10db pad work for me? http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MicroTrack10dBPad.html

I've seen people using this kind of stuff:

http://www.radioshack.com/sm-gold-plated-volume-control-cable-for-stereo-headphones--pi-2102975.html

http://store.shure.com/store/shure/en_US/DisplayProductDetailsPage/productID.104991600

Anyone could recommend me a good one?

And isnt it $30 too much for something like this?

Thanks

i use that same mm one with my camcorder
works great
i also heard the sp one sucks, and it only goes to 6db

the radio shack and shure ones are basically the same as the sp one, you adjust the volume knob and it cuts the signal
not sure if there is a way to know exactly how much is being cut unless you have meters to read too and most likely with a camcorder you don't

i didn't pay 30 for my mm one, i paid 18 but the place is no longer around - cascade

I think I have the CS one if you want it. PM me and make an offer.  I think it's the 10 dB.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

I'm in the market for one of these.  It's nice to know to stay away from the SP one.  However, it DOES attenuate more than 6 dB.  It cuts 6 dB at its LOWEST attenuation level and will cut the signal entirely when cranked to the max.  Just wanted to clear that up in case someone wanted to try the less expensive option.
