Channel drop-outs Sony M10 with external mics
« on: March 03, 2016, 10:02:31 PM »
Hi Members,

Is it possible to have temporary 'channel drop outs' and other loud distortions with the Sony M10?

I recently taped a few shows. The first show is fine. But the second show suffered from some major dropped channel issues and distortion intermitently.

I had the items in my front jeans pocket. A Sony M10 and a 12 volt battery box with Audio Technica Mics AT943.

I'm a large man and I can only assume that maybe I banged my rig and number of times and banged my connections against the arms of the chair.. Possibly the banging may have tugged on my connections as well.

So my question is would knocking my connections in my jeans pocket maybe account for this? I was up and down in my seat a fair bit. Everytime the audience stood up and then sat back down.

Maybe my right angle connection on my M10 (between the M10 and the battery box) was twisting every time I moved.

Could any of these movements cause these sorts of dropped  channel issues?

The 3.5mm input connector is the likely culprit.  Those don't typically wear well over time and will become more sensitive to failure or becoming unseated, resulting in intermittent or distorted signal.

Thanks for your tip Craig T. The only thing is though my items are still almost brand new. The 2nd show ever recorded with the setup.

I wonder if gaffer-taping down all my connections would help?

Can you tell if the dropouts were at times you were standing up and sitting back down?

I have to say, I've never had problems from a loose connection on an M10 (knock wood) — once the jack is seated, it stays pretty well. And the jack twisting shouldn't be a problem, either.

Would love to hear a link to samples if you want to PM me.

I will re-listen to the recording and see if I can pin point what I was doing when it occurred.

I definately didn't deliberately touch the mics or the unit itself during the recordings.
