DIY Split Omni Bar
« on: August 11, 2015, 11:38:35 AM »
Thought I would share a DIY project I did a while ago but have not used in the field yet.

I wanted to find a way to use split omnis up to 6ft but have it still be portable.
I found a light weight telescoping rod online that was reasonably priced.

http://www.buddipole.com/lotewh.html

I cut it down once I got it so it would be no longer than 6 feet fully extended.
I wanted to use shock mounts to hold a pair of actives so I bought two replacement 5/8" stud for this clamp:

One fit in the fatter end of the pole nicely while the other stud had to have it's non-threaded end ground down to fit the more narrow end of the telescoping rod.

I then added some epoxy to the non-threaded end of both studs and inserted into the pole.

Pics on stand just to see how it much would bend with weight on both ends.
(just some empty XLR cables since I dont yet have my second untethered set of actives just yet).

First field test in a couple of weeks.
As long as my actives arrive...

Will update the post after.

Where did you get replacement studs? Last time I looked, and asked various vendors, the only way to get studs was to buy another clamp.

Thanks, guess I should have tried finding them from someone other than windtech.

First field test!

Have only listened a little so far, but I am just glad they held up on a 12-hour day.
Had a velcro soft bar insert and some gaff tape supporting the middle to ease some of the bend on either end but overall, the DIY bar worked out great.

Pics from Hop Jam in Vermont this past Saturday, Aug 22nd.
