"on the fly" matrix with the UA-5
« on: July 30, 2011, 05:49:53 AM »
I was wondering how to you use your UA-5 for "on the fly" matrix or is there a thread out there that explains how to use the UA-5 to do a matrix with it.

Do you need to use 2 recorders?

There are very basic instructions in the UA-5 FAQ http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=14389.0 and probably more detailed instructions elsewhere on ts.

has any one used the UA-5 for matrixs out there?

How do you know if you are getting all 4 channels in the mix? Is it best to keep the SBD feed down low and have mics a little higher up in the mix, most likely the mics will always be onstage.

you have to monitor and set the balance "on the fly",so more isolation from your phones/iem's the better.

I used one for onstage mic matrix.  I would run the mic up to where I wanted them then add the SBD feed( via the RCA or 1/4" inputs )until the vocals cleared up and call it good.  Was a fairly decent mix most of the time and I was able to do it in a loud room.  Still it can be hit or miss since you usually cannot hear things great trying to mix live.

You may have delay issues.  I've tried to do a "on the fly" matrix with a soundboard, fm soundboard feed, and mikes, and anyone of the sources could hit the recorder a few ms before the other resulting in an echoey sound.  Thats fine if the sources are recorded on separate tracks, but if you are mixing an fm soundboard feed with the mikes on a single track or two widely spaced mikes to a single track, there may be issues.

Give it a try, I learned a lot from the experience.

As scooter said... it takes time for sound to travel through air.  If you are back by the SBD, the SBD feed is instantaneous and the AUD feed takes roughly 1 millisecond per foot of distance.  At a distance this sounds like a wicked echo.  Tribal knowledge and personal experience says 10 or 15' is fine, but if you are in a big room and it's something like 50 or 100', don't try to do an on the fly matrix.  What about 25 or 30 feet?  It's probably OK if you are 80% SBD and 20% AUD (or vice versa) because then the delay is less obvious.

There are probably dozens of Max Creek tapes on the LMA made by a particular guy... I think his name is Mike Nichols.  His mics are Octava.  In the last year or two he picked up an R44, but for years he did on the fly matrix with a UA5.

It's like crack.....or if you're old like me freebasing.....It's just soooo good the first time that you have to keep chasing the "more better".  Went from a low end Behringer mixer to a modded UA-5 to an R-44 to a 680 and now I'm at an Alesis HD-24 8) :o  DO IT ya know you wanna    >:D
