Zoom F8n
« on: June 05, 2018, 12:20:44 AM »
I wonder if the release of the new Zoom F8n (with all its improvements, such as automix) will lead to the MixPre6 and MixPre10T dropping in price?

I doubt it. Among other things, the discrete pre-amps probably don't come cheap, nor does production in the States or SD's level of customer service...

or SD's level of customer service...

I have had extremely positive outcomes from customer service from SD in the past. Nothing major, but none the less positive.

But my recent dealings wth Zoom’s customer service and service center were absolutely amazing and almost unbelievably so.

I posted ll about t all in the F8 thread

I have received and unpacked my F8n  from B&H.  I probably won't have a chance to try it out in the field until mid-September when the chamber music series I record begins its new season, but I hope to test the headphone amp and the powered connection to the FRC-8 over the next few weeks.

Anecdote: after flawless recording over three years, my F8 suddenly lost headphone amp output on June 1 (luckily after I had set up for a piano recital, and the record function worked fine for the whole time).  Since I was already decided on ordering an F8n, and repair costs and express shipping would have been expensive for dealing with the remaining two recitals in June, I bought (~$60) a FiiO A3 battery powered headphone amp and fed it with the F8 sub-output, using a 1/8" male to 1/4" female cable for my Remote Audio 7506 monitoring headphones.  The FiiO amp is much better than the internal headphone amp on the F8 (or any of the SD machines I have used, the 722 and 633).  So I didn't have the thrill I usually get from the playback in editing (via Grace m9xx) being so much nicer than what I thought I had recorded.  But I now have a very high standard to compare the new improved F8n headphone amp to.

I was actually thinking of using an external amp should I ever get the F8. I tried this with the 744 but since there is no way to route HP output (with easy source selection) to either the balanced TA3's or the 1/4 line out on the 744 I eventually gave up. Good to know it's possible with the zoom. Off-topic: Fiio is a fantastic company which really relies on hands-on beta testing from users all over the world, and constantly improves their products. I kind of hope Zoom is following in their footsteps :)

And now I've got *my* shipping notification from B&H sent to me! That my F8n is on its way and I should have it here in New Zealand by early next month. Excited

VERY preliminary report: the F8n headphone amp is indeed clearly better than the F8's, maybe in the same class as using the FiiO A3 out of the machine.

My F8n is scheduled to arrive at my reshipper in Oregon USA tomorrow from B&H, but then will take a bit longer to get from there to New Zealand :-/

However I'm getting ready for that day! Having now purchased an iPad Mini 2 and iPod Touch 6th Gen (wonder if I can use both together at once? That would be the dream! But using either one at a time is the plan at the moment). Currently hunting down research for the next part of the jigsaw puzzle which is how to mount these best to my Orca OR30 bag.

VERY preliminary report: the F8n headphone amp is indeed clearly better than the F8's, maybe in the same class as using the FiiO A3 out of the machine.

Great news! Am not surprised they took care of this, it was the most common complainent about the F8 (after the teeny tiny knobs... but physics prevents them being much bigger and still fitting into such a small recorder!)

So the F8n apparently has a change over the F8 I don't like. The little knobs on the front are now Fader controls versus Trim controls (they control the gain of a channel going into the mix). It's more like the Mixpre-* series (more mixer like).

menu > system > track knob option > trim and it functions just like the original F8.
