Foam to make windscreens?
« on: August 23, 2006, 10:25:25 PM »
Can anyone recommend some thick foam to make windscreens out of?  Its a stereo mic so i'm going to wrap the foam around it and not carve it.  I was going to buy this, http://www.trewaudio.com/catalog/items/item840.htm However I was hoping to find something thicker than 1/4"

This is for the AKG c34, which is 3 inches deep and a 1.5 inches in diameter, so no foam windscreen in production i've found will work.

Have you thought about using one of the big DPAs? It will fit a 3/4" diameter mic and you would have to take out one inch of foam to get the 3" depth and it would leave 3/4" on the end..

I was wrong on the diameter, it was 1.5 inches, i don't have it in front of me so I was trying to remember what I had measured.  I realized when you said try the DPA's (which I have in front of me) that clearly I was off base.

The Neumann WS89 is ~1-5/8" i.d. and ~3-3/4" deep, so...maybe it's close enough?  Or maybe try the Shure A81WS and hollow out a bit of the coarser internal foam?
