home deck ?
« on: July 10, 2004, 09:57:15 PM »
looking around at home decks and i like the sounds of the fostex d5. the only problem is no rca plugs, which i'd need to hook up to my sound card(ap24/96). from what i've seen some times you can convert xlr>rca and have it work, other times not. in other words, could i just get adapters for my current cables(or xlr>rca cables)? or would i need some sort of converter? or would it be better to go w/ a tascam da-30 mkll, panasonic sv3800, ect? i know there's been a lot of discussions compareing these decks, but nothing realy adressed the conection issue.

thanks for any input,       kirk

my personal favorite decks are the tascams- i believe paul over at pro digital should have some da-30s that he has worked on for sale

I thought da-30's did not play nicely with 90m tapes? Just something to consider...

A guy on the internet named Daryan Lenz is a well know certifiable DAT repairman, he might have a few for sale, too.

probly, but lee's d5 is just out of my price range at the moment. i'm just triing to examine my options until some $$ comes in. i think what i saw there was all $400+.
also i'll mostly be using it for transfers to my computer.

and tim i don't think tape length is an issue w/ any off the decks i mentioned.

the da-30 does have a tape issue with 90m tapes, however the mod to get it to accept them is super easy and im sure paul would be willing to do it before it goes out the door.  also check ebay- great deals to be found there

you might want to look into a tascam da-20 mkii, it has coax out and has no problems playing 90m tapes.  if you keep you eye on ebay you should be able to find one for a good price, i got mine for $200 brand new.

if you just want the deck to extract to HD, why not get a DAT tape drive for your PC and extract from tape without going through the SPDIF.

because the dat drives frequently make mistakes and are somewhat unreliable.

I thought that the extraction scripts people are using preform multiple reads to detect read errors?  I understand that the error correction is better when using a DAT deck, but I thought that this was worked out through the process.

Isn't the d5's transport the same as the da20?

i believe they are, however im not sure of that.  im not as big of a fan of the 20 anymore as i am of the 30 and 40.  a lot more control with the 30 and 40, especially with that jog dial.

both made by pioneer, but

      d5---4 motor
   da20---2 motor
   da30---4 motor   mkII anyway

could be not right though
