holy crap that's a big mic for a lav!. The idea is to hide the lav so it's not seen (unless you're doing TV news where it's acceptable to show the mic).

I hate best lists, but Fred's list of mics is spot on (although I would move Sanken up one notch and maybe even keep it on the same line as the DPA 406x -- they really stack up very well next to each other).

Yes, these are the best sounding Omni mics I've found.  Samples of several mics at: Soundmann.com.

By the way, for ambient/nature recording, I prefer the DPA4060.  They are more natural sounding, smaller, easier to power, and in my opinion, have less issues with wind noise.  But for music, the Nevatons have a warmth and detail that can't be beat.  There is something about the DPA4060 that I don't like for music.  I wish they were great, since I just bought a pair, but I find my ears fatigue after listening to them for a long time.  Can't say what the problem is, something with the mid to high frequencies.

Cause it is more or less a choice between the Nevatons and the Sankens...


BTW. On the Nevaton web-page it became clear to after downloading and zooming the freq response (not zoomable in the page)

it became clear that they cut under 100Hz. And that means that they are at -20db at 50Hz, where most of the other lavs only start form 0db.

Has anyone here used the countryman b6 (or any other countryman mic) for recording anything?

I use them often for talking head events and they are great for theater applications (read transparent and tiny, really tiny)...but I've always wondered about rigging a pair for ambient music recording.

Never used countryman, but some guys did, maybe u should start a thread wtih the question, more chances for an answer.

What Im searching for is a omni pair that would go for stereo on less important orchestra recordings from close range where I dont have my whole gear with me. Just to plug into the minir82 and go.

They have the Sankens wired for the minir, so thats really easy. The Nevatons are XLR, that goes with a cable.


The only question would be, wich have a smoother sound, cause I cant try them before buying where I am.

I know it is stupid to talk about sound with such explanations but what I meant is not just dry and flat, but something that sounds good with an orchestra from close range.

The gold mesh screen you're seeing is just a pop screen and it's removeable.  The mic itself is not much bigger than a 4061.  Sounds better than a 4061, that's for sure.

But now that Ive done a bit of research, I see that they have an under 100Hz cut that goes already at -20dB at 50Hz, so that makes not so suitable for orchestra, and thats what Im aiming for...

And I guess that cut has its reasons also in the noise level of the microphone.

stupid question why lavs for orchestra.?.the self-noise because of the physics of the mic will not be optimal for these kind of shows

I have my reasons why lavs (I also got a normal small diaphragm setup), and if You cant say something constructive, then maybe You should help someone else. (not meaning it in a mean way, sorry . Im just just feeling a bit attacked with your attitude)

If you can help, I am thankfull for you advice, you do have more experience.

ahhh.... Thanks for that. Never heard of this mic before and all the lavs I've used were strictly for vocals and usually used in conjunction with a wireless unit.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't.  They will run on a 9V BB (their spec is 9-48 or 9-52, can't remember which).

I'll take a look.  Right now I just use a Fostex FR-2LE and plug the XLR adapters directly into this.  Nice box, and hassle free operation.  I would rather carry Fostex plus mics vs. Edirol R09 plus battery box plus mics...
