Topic: Letter requesting permission to tape

Hello all-

A question...
Does anyone have an e-mail/letter they use to approach bands or their management to seek permission to tape a show?
Possibly something that explains how that recordings are not intended for sale or profit but rather as a  hobby and personal enjoyment.
I was planing on approaching a few local jazz bands that normally would never be approached with the request to tape their live shows.
Any help, input, advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I think, Johnny, you'll find that you just outlined your own letter.

If they are local bands, go to a show and meet them.  It's easier to blow off a letter than a person and you'll have the opportunity to give them more information if they have questions.  Offer to do it as an archiving service for them.  If you already go to their shows and they play smaller clubs, they might recognize you as a regular fan.

Of course if they are likely to say no and you plan to stealth if they do, a letter is good.

If you going to the show with another person, I would have them ask the band. If the band says no, the attention is drawn to your friend. This way you can still stealth without any attention being drawn to you earlier.

i have only been turned down once when asking the band.  and the guy who turned me down invited me back to record later.  if they say no, become a regular and id bet that eventually they will permit you to tape. 

the guy who turned me down just did not want that particular evening documented because there was a new bassist in their band.  he said if its going to be archived, id dont want it to be tonight.
