reading this article ("Latest DirecTV Receivers “Earn Their Stripes” But the Defect Doesn’t Win Any Awards") got me thinking. even though the lcd sets (which is what i have) are not as prone to burn in, the way i understand it is that the bar sections dont get light, so i wasw thinking - are grey bars better than black because they are getting light..? i think they look worse, but if using them saves my set, i will make the switch...

On LCDs, no.  Technically the grey would use a *bit* less power, but other than that it's no difference.

On a plasma, though, the grey is better.

i like black better myself, and really like SD shows letterboxed - then you have black all the way around, looks kinda cool imo

On my cable service (TWC, SA-8300HD) it will put grey bars on the sides of SD content, and black bars on the equivalent HD channel.  For example if you're watching the simpsons, it will put grey bars on Channel 5 (SD) and black bars on Channel 705 (HD)... at least for me, this is a factor of what the box is sending to the TV.

really..? so there is nothing i have to worry about (besides clouding and flashlighting, but those are either present or they are not - they are not, in my case - they dont develop over time) with this type of set ..? that is great news.

LCDs have a light behind the panel so you can actually see the picture.  Those lights have a rated life of so many hours.  After they burn out it is *very* expensive to replace them, and you pretty much have to just buy a new TV.

You can see it in person by checking out an old laptop and putting it next to a new laptop and noticing the difference in brightness.  It can be pretty apparent if the old machine is 5+ years old.

Not something to worry about, though - just enjoy the tv. ;)

i have also figured out, which is along the same lines - when viewing a show on the tv it can have black bars, but if i view it via the tivo (standard, not hd) it has grey

That is all very much dependent on the TVs used, the station you're watching, the provider of the content, and the settings on the device (cable box/tivo/whatever).  It wont be the same for everyone.
