Mitchell, could expand quickly on how the internal Sony d100 mics compare to your AT BP4025 in terms of stereo separation, clarity and wind susceptibility?

I'm thinking of getting an external stereo mic to run through my MixPre3 to use while traveling, replacing my d100 for that use. The 4025 is one mic I've been looking at.

Thanks!

I'm traveling right now so I'm answering based on memory. The BP4025s are less "wind susceptible" than the D100s. However, even with the BP4025 I use a very nice furry windscreen (the WindTech MM-26 Mic Muff) that works fantastically well even in pretty darn windy conditions. You still get the sound of the wind, but not wind plosives. You might want to also consider the Audio-Technica AT8022. It's a bit cheaper and also a very good mic. It also depends on what you're recording. I record enough live music, music played in marches, and ambient sounds where I need to hold the mic (or place it very carefully). I wouldn't want to do there same with the recorder itself: too easy to drop, etc.

I love the BP4025 with MixPre-3 combo. Works great for me. If I remember correctly the BP4025 comes with a very long cable. So you may want to purchase a shorter cable for traveling reasons. (I already had a shorter cable available.)

I've used the D100 attached to a pistol grip. Very solid in the hand, little chance of dropping it, and no handling noise. You can point it like a mic.  Plus no dangling wire from mic to recorder. The Sony supplied windscreen does a great job. This has been my best solution for a very high quality, very portable recording machine.

Yes, I can see that working well. Do you have a particular pistol grip you suggest?

It has been -- so far -- very solid and comfortable, and it's cheap!

Thanks! Unfortunately they do not ship to the U.S. But I seem to have found some others at Amazon that are very similar and not much more.

I used my BP4025 a fair amount this summer with the MixPre3. All the time I assigned phantom power to both channels. The mic hasn't been damaged yet! However, I had no idea that assigning phantom to one channel only would work. I'll have to check that out myself as I'm typically using 4 AA batteries for "walk around" recordings. Using one channel would certainly provide me with more recording time.
When you'll test the one-phantom solution please give us your impressions.

If I remember correctly the BP4025 comes with a very long cable. So you may want to purchase a shorter cable for traveling reasons. (I already had a shorter cable available.)
The supplied cable is 5m long! So I'd need a shorter cable too (something around 2m). Do you know some good brand for a 2m "5-PIN-to-2x3PINs" cable?
Thanks

Will test sometime in the next week.

I don't have a particular cable maker to recommend. I had bought the sister mic AT8022 a number of years ago as it could be powered by battery (which I needed at the time). It came with a much shorter cable which I use with the BP4025. But I think there are a few good options to choose from, especially if you look at BH Photo Video. But these are definitely trickier to find and many of the options seem to be quite long.

^^ Try tgakidis or darktrain, both users on this site, for custom cables.  I have purchased a bunch from Ted (tgakidis) and they are all fantastic.  I don't have any from darktrain, but I know there are a lot of satisfied customers here.

I just had time today to check running the BP4025 with MixPre-3. I tried 1 channel phantom, then 2 channels phantom, then back to 1 channel. Good news: the mic did not break! Sound quality sounds no different. In theory this should allow one to have a much longer battery life but I don't know if it will play out that way. I certainly do not have time to test battery length. With 2 phantoms I could run for 2.5 hours. I'm not expecting 5 hours, but perhaps 3.5 or 4. But someone else will have to do a test to check for sure.

Thank you so much mitchelim. I think I'll do also a specrum test to see if there is a minimal difference between 1 vs 2 phantoms.

I was searching for a portable DSD recorder and found this. B&H has it for $726 which seems like a decent price considering the features. I still have my 744T but want DSD. I figured the Schoeps > V2 would sound great on this. I haven’t read the whole thread but it seems that people like it. I have two Tascam DA-3000’s at home and absolutely love them. I asked Sound Devices if they have plans on going with DSD at any point, they wouldn’t comment on it.

Just out of curiosity, what's the appeal of DSD for you?

I digitized over 1,000 sbd cassette masters from the GD vault using various hardware. I used the mini me, 744 and Tascam da-3000. I found that the DSD is the only format that captures the warmth of analog while still keeping the clarity of digital. There were some tapes that lost low end at 24/192 but kept it in DSD. It’s like digital vinyl. I’ve never heard anything like it. Stunningly amazing. I bought two Tascams and run them as a 4-track. DSD keeps the depth, clarity, warmth and definition that vinyl brings.

I would love to field test one sometime.

Will any of those you worked on be released in a DSD format?

I've circulated over 100 of them so far in 2496, but not DSD. Once i have software which allows me to do patching, pitch correction, level adjustments, then I'll put them out in DSD, but I won't put them out raw.
