according to AT's site, they are omni's, which may not suit many types of recordings.

i highly recommend these with the AT8533 Phantom Power module:
http://www.audio-technica.com/prodpro/profiles/AT853a.html

or:

http://www.audio-technica.com/prodpro/profiles/AT853Rx.html  which comes with the phantom power module, but not a battery pack.

unless you know how to mod the SoundPro version for phantom power, i would get the AT version.  these mics are great for their price point!!

i've taped side by side with a buddy running Neumann KM140's. there was a difference in the sonic quality between our tapes, but not a $1k+ worth.

"Mics? What mics? This is my hat."

i would imagine.. look at them.. their tiny lavaleir mics..  go for it man.  u can stealth with all kinds of mics..  look in the rig pics. there are some stealth pics in there, your mics don't have to be really small to stealth..  its just more risky..  good luck..

when would "omnis" be good. Are all others called directional, and when would they be better?
