CANS... Anybody use the Sennheiser HD-380s
« on: December 04, 2010, 03:48:46 PM »
Borrowed the hedphones from the soundguy last night and they sounded sweet... you think so or what is in your bag? I usually use a set of Sennheiser 202 chopped up and in a set of -29db hearing protection.

I believe these are the upgrade to the 280s, which are very popular among engineers.
Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

From reading the reviews about these some people claim that the 380 design eliminates the "head in the clamp" syndrome of the 280s. Looks to be the same specs ( 8Hz - 27khz ), similar driver technology ( dynamic transducer, impedance @ 54ohms- you can use em with your iPod ) and similar weight ( almost a half pound ! ).

I like the 280s that I've been using for a few years and don't have any problems with comfort ( and I have a big dome ) but if you listen to cans for extended periods it might be worth the extra scratch. Otherwise you can get a pair of 280s for less than $80. The 380s are about twice that.

I have HD280's.  I bought them used.  I like them, they have a better low end than most of my other headphones and even PC speakers.  But...  I have a big melon and these don't fit well.  I've used sox to synth tones to test my hearing range and my PC speakers produce the higher end better / audible by me.  And those aren't even very good PC speakers.  Not that my used headphones are to spec.  But I did have a pair of Sony MDR-V600's that were way more comfortable to me.  And spec'd to 5Hz-35Hz iirc.  If specs are to be trusted.  My HD280s seem to cap out at about 16.7kHz.  The PC speakers (or my hearing) at about 17.2kHz.  (I could have sworn I heard at least a perfect 5th higher than that BITD)

I also have the 280's. Definitely happy with the sound though I sometimes get the 'clamp' feeling when wearing them for extended periods. Still pretty comfortable though and durable as well. Certainly worth the price.

I have the 280's as well.  That's what I use sitting at my computer all evening mixing.  I have a cardboard box next to my desk about 6" thick.  When I'm done for the night, I pull the ear muffs apart and pop it over the box using the box as an artificial head.  I think when I put them on the next day they are "pre-stretched" a little, which reduces the clamp effect.  Not by a huge amount, but some.  Enough that I repeat this behavior night after night.

I've had two pairs, and they got a lot of use.  And they break.  At that price, I simply can not afford to buy headphones every year.

I traded down to Sony 5706s.  Sound is equivalent.  And I think the isolation is a tad better.

can you tell us where they break and what happens? Does the band break, does the ear muff fall off, cable get torn up, etc.

headphones easily can become more than microphones and its sometimes good but for me, there's no reason I would need the sennheniser HD800 headphones unless I have microphones at least twice that much.  ;D

In both instances, the left speaker (can) went out.  I assume there is/was a broken wire in there somewhere.   The same thing happened both times.  Love the sound, love the fit, loved the sound isolation, but poorly made.  I couldn't get the darn thing apart to try to see where the connection is bad, but I assume it is the connection on the right side.  Before I threw the things in the dump, I snipped the left side wire and there was no signal coming in from the right side.

My Sony 7506's are new, and we'll see how those do--I have two pair now, one for a back up.  I can't be without headphones for 10 days.  We'll see how well these things hold up.  Had to pay near list for the 1st pair and snagged a used pair for $40.

And I'm in love with the 7506s--great db isolation and good sound.

I've had my 7506's for ten years, still work like a champ.  The only thing I've done is swap out the pleather earpads with the Beyerdynamic velour pads from the DT250 cans (they fit perfectly).  More comfy, if you ask me.  The only thing to watch for is the little cables that come out of the band then lead into the cans themselves.  One of them got caught on the band and it snipped off some of the cover for the wire.  The wiring is slightly exposed, but it still works perfectly.  I still consider that the weakest point on the build quality on the 7506's/V6's.

Well, if it makes you feel any better or helps to justify the costs, most headphones/speakers are microphones  8)
