i would think it would fall under the "sony flat rate" deal and only cost the certain price no matter how much is wrong
check in the Archival Information section, there is a guide on sony products there

Here's hoping you have better results than me - Sony returned mine still broken. :'(
Now, they have it again, still waiting to see if they get it right this time. Good luck!

hey brian where did you send the deck ??and was it a loading problem??
-
I had a loading prob on a D8. It sounds like the same thing my deck was doing.
One of the white rollers in the deck was unglued & pushed up.
I sent it to pro digital & they fixed the prob, cleaned the heads & got a clean bill of health with low error rates. It was around 125.00
You may want to check out Prodigital.com before you send it to Sony they do a great job.

I sent my deck to the Sony Service center in CA. Wish now I'd sent it to ProDigital - heard nothing but good things about them.
My deck started unloading tapes randomly - during play, ff, rw, rec. Then it chewed a tape. Then it stopped loading tapes at all. Still don't know how they fixed it, as I haven't gotten it back yet.
I'd give PD a call and tell them your symptoms - they may be able to fix it cheaper and faster than Sony.
