note that when you cut the legs off, you will lose a bit of stability.

for fob i generally run with the bottom of the pole just off the ground, like 1". Then the legs ar essentially flat and you can throw a backpack or jacket over top of them to prevent people from triping over the stand

thanx

I usually run the legs hiked up a bit tight any way
and yep
i do the back pack trick
or if on grass, a tent stake or 2 to help stabilize it

when I hack it
I'll take before and after pics

I am still a bit nervous about cutting my stand
but it WILL happen soon

thanx again

mannnn
I always have at least one aluminum hooked tent stake with me for shows on lawn or grass
have been doing this for over 21 years...

the first the Grateful Dead played shoreline in 87 the section was on the hugely sloped lawn...
needed a stake there for sure!

thanx

ok
so up there ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

you see the pre chopping

and now the choped

Open Post Chop

Partial Open POST Chop

Closed POST Chop

Partial Open POST Chop with pieces cut

So
I ended up cutting about 5.5" off the legs   (you can see the pieces I hacked off above ^^^^^^)
the rubber caps use about 7/8" or so of the leg...
6" would have brought the legs in tight with the "collar" of the tripod
I wanted the feet to stick up just above the collar
it worked out to be about 5 1/2 "

Cut it with a simple jig saw w/ metal blade
then used a grinding stone  on a drill to "round" corner the ends of the hacked legs

any how I hope that helps others

and as soon as I run this stand I'll report back
I may run it on sunday...
for now

Piling onto the tent stake comments (I keep 3 in my bag), I have a similar stand/similar legs, and at outdoor festival recording on a slope I've actually stabbed the back leg(s) into the ground so my stand would run plum, and add tent stake on the remaining above ground leg(s).  It's freakin' slick to have a skinny legged stand outdoors.

I own two of these stands, and I use them on stage all the time. One will be promptly chopped this weekend due to this thread. Thanks!

Resurrected this topic - as I though it might interest a few folks...

Just found the box the stand came in and all the literature aka user manual is from Manfrotto:
Instructions:
Lightweight Aluminum
Studio-Location Stands.

so in fact Dyna-lite is  the same as Bogen

Since we're resurrecting, might as well report back that I did in fact chop one of my two stands a year ago, and it worked out great. When I need the extra support I go for the unchopped stand, when I'm on stage or need low profile, etc., I used the chopped version. Thanks again for the idea!

Cut off 6", chamfer the ends of the legs with a file and epoxy the rubber feet on so they do not get lost.  Worked for me.
