I just got a Macbook pro and was wondering what software to use to process shows I record. In the PC world I use sound forge then CD wave editor and then traders little helper. need help!!
-
I use Sound Studio to edit and track, and xAct for everything else. xAct can do batch renames, which was a huge time saver for me when I realized I didn't need to manually edit each file name.
It can also encode your FLACs (aligning on sector boundaries for those that still burn to CD), and tag your flacs. Let me know if you have any other specific questions and I can share my workflows.
Oh, one more thing, when you save .txt files on mac, save them as plain text. I believe it likes to use Rich Text by default, and that doesn't appear correctly on PC.
Good luck!

There are plenty of options that are good. I personally use Adobe Audition and the Izotope Ozone plugin to do all the mixdown and editing, and then track/FLAC with the free program Audacity.
Soundforge is now available for Mac; I've not used it, but I'd take a look at it, at least.

Sound forge is very basic, but should get the job done. And it is free (or was) with Tascam DR-70d purchase.
I use Logic. It's $100 at the App store.

I use Sound Studio ($30) as well, but when I've looked at other programs like Audacity, they're all capable — it's mostly a matter of taste. And xAct is indeed a must.
Tag is another useful little free program, for quickly attaching FLAC tags. The "guess track number" feature is especially welcome.

Following a suggestion from DigiGal, I have been using Audiofile Engineering's Triumph. I think it is pretty good so far (I have only had it for about three weeks). Lots of features, including the iZotope de-noising tools...

thanks for the help everyone

You can track/Flac with Audition, why bother with Audacity?

Because Audacity is free and open-source, and has a huge user base, as it's Mac/Win/Linux.

Oh wow, thank you! I actually didn't know the Audition marker function could do that. Can it also export ID3 tags, because I definitely like that ability in Audacity.

Let me revise that. I actually attempted this, and using Audacity is much faster. Audition (at least 5.5 on Mac) seems to have removed the "change marker types" feature and I cannot get the export feature to actually work (it's there, but blacked out/not available).
Too bad, as the actual markers themselves are easy to place and much easier to move around.

Based on my experience I would recommend staying away from Sound Forge for Mac in its current state. It is beta software at best and no where near the functionality of its Windows parent. I will have to check out some some of the apps listed here. My go to is still Samplitude on Windows. If I can find a decent replacement on the Mac it will be bye, bye PC!
