xy middle mic + omi's (about 1 foot apart), in a small/medium to large room setting vs. an outdoor setting  recording....
what's the better application?
minimalism - its the least you can do.

Omnis typically work best outside or up close in a good sounding room.  Unless you place a baffle between them, they work best when split more than a foot in almost all situations.  Using omnis only I'd say space them between 15" to 3' to be safe, but that's just a general guide, sometimes wider can work.  When combined with a center X/Y pair, the omnis are best splilt farther.  Say 3'-6'.  Depends on the situation though.

Agreed! I think if you had spaced omnis[3-6'], and a pair of cards/hypers/supetrs XY would turn out great. Of course, Im a big fan of traditional configs compared to running 4 mics just to get a good 2 channel recording. I ALWAYS run DINa/DIN/NOS with my Cards/Hypers/Subcards and those methods sound KILLER IMO. YMMV as always. Or if youre dead set on running 4 mics, try a pair of cards/hypers DINa/DIN in the middle, and omnis spaced 3'-6' ;) Im just NOT A FAN of XY, period :)

X/Y can find salvation by being mixed with split omnis.   And although people do it all the time and it often sounds fine, you may have less problems using X/Y in the center than a near-spaced center pair.  But in either case, I'd space the omnis more than 1' apart.
