Topic: Sandisk Sansa Clip+ -- Windows Media Player Required?

I'm about as ignorant as can be when it comes to MP3 players.  Never had one, never even seen one in person.  My brother-in-law just e-mailed me for tech support because he bought a "Sandisk sansa clip+" which he says is requiring him to upgrade to Windows Media Player 11 in order to use it.  The problem is that he doesn't have any Windows Media Player, thanks to me "un-Microsofting" his computer years ago in favor of better, free alternatives (VLC, in this case).  Is anybody familiar with this device?  Is Windows Media Player REALLY necessary for this thing to function?

seems highly unlikely. can't he just plug it in and it mounts as an external drive?

towards the last few pages, the sansa clip is discussed a lot. since the people who own these primary play flac files (and i don't think Windows media player supports those), i, again, think WMP is not necessary.

You don't have to use WMP.  The Clip can be connected like a drive and you can drag and drop to it.  Here's the manual:

FYI, WMP does play flacs.  Takes extra effort but it does.

same here, but to stream via my Denon I have to use WMP 11.  sucks but its nice to stream off my network while I cook and stuff.

I have a clip+ and never used medial player with it.  Just drag and drop like an external drive.  It's a nice little player.  best 60$ I ever spent.

I have a Sandisk Fuze and use foobar to make mu3 playlists from flacs which will play on the Sandisk device

anybody heard of a firmware update to play FLACs gapless? Other than that inconvenience the Fuze is badass.

so i got my clip+ today and naturally I wanted to add some torrents on this. I plugged it into my computer thinking it was exactly like the iriver I was using, loaded music onto it and unplugged it. turned it on and I have an "unknown" folder where it decided to stuff anything from govt mule to phish to wsp to eden house even though when I copied the music from my computer, they were all in their respective folders for one another.
I'm now thinking the songs/albums that were not tagged to say govt mule as the artist will not be moved into the correct folder.
the workaround I found is to create one folder for all govt mule recordings, WSP recordings, etc and navigate there through the folders menu in clip+.

has anyone else found an easier way to resolve this? before I found the folder section, I deleted all the fingerprint, info sheets thinking that would resolve it but that did nothing.

so I just created a main folder for all the separate recordings by the same band and this under the folder list just displays junk like1F020000_New Folder which is actually a govt mule recording.

you can play the music from here but it is quite annoying after I created a main directory for each artist.

This workds for me

1. copy flac folder to the  music folder on the sandisk
2. Then copy flac folder from sandsk into foobar200 with live show tagger
3.  use live show tagger to tag the show update the info
4.  in foobar200 save a play list into the music folder as m3u or ms3u8
5.  from sandsk you can pick the playlist

having hardly ever used foobar2000, I found your directions very easy to follow but there is an issue with step 2. When I drag a group of FLAC files (or a single flac file) into foobar2000, I get a 'do not enter' style cursor.
I can create play lists on my computer using live show tagger but I'll now try to do this before copying to sansa.

All right. I'm working through this with trial and errorS. lots of weird errors.

I'll try to make this as simple as possible.

1. I want to download all FLAC files of smokin' joe's STS 9 recording:

I download all of them AND the ffp, md5, and info sheet.

2. open up foobar2000. drag songs and ffp, md5, and info sheet into the playlist as well.

3. select songs, right-click > tagging > live show tagger. the info sheet is pulled up correctly and track names update without any problem.

4. I save playlist on my desktop in a folder called playlists

5. plug sansa in. copy sts9 music folder and then the playlist into the same folder.

6. disconnect sansa and I find the sts9 recording to be in the unknown folder.

I know my method is mostly right because it worked with a little feat recording I did the same way and a phish recording that I DLed via torrent. I'm also saving the playlist with the same exact name as it appears on archive or torrent. ex: sts92008-07-26.earthworks.flac16f I would rather shorten it to sts92008-07-26


one more thing.

there is a playlist folder on the internal memory but when I drag playlists into that, no music played on the sansa.

this is a really kick ass music player but it certainly doesn't behave like the iriver
