Seeking Out of Warranty TASCAM DR-680 Service?
« on: February 24, 2015, 10:08:11 AM »
I have a non-functioning DR-680 that I took a chance on from eBay.

It is - as advertised. Not working.

Came with its stock power supply - I tested that - 12V. Works.

Tried with batteries - no go.

Clean as heck - perfect cosmetics.

I've filled out the form at the TASCAM/TEAC website - but haven't heard anything.

From a few posts I could dig up here - I guess phone contact is the way to go?

I know some folks here have had issues...but I don't have an axe to grind - happy to pay for repair.

Any pointers/advice?

Will it turn on or is it completely dead?

Did the seller give you any info on when it quit working and under what circumstances?

Maybe some of the folks that had their units go belly up under warranty could describe what had to be repaired on their units?

call Busman?

It's bricked. Dead.

But that's - "as described" in the listing. No surprises.

The seller seemed to not really know anything about it.

For out-of-warranty work:
TASCAM factory service is usually $60/hr, minimum 1hr.  You send it in on your dime, they look at it and give you a quote for repair.    If the quote is more than the unit is worth, you can have it sent back at your expense, or abandon it.

My initial guess is that the unit was used with an external battery pack that puts out too much voltage - the DR-680 was not designed for much more than the 12V the official power supply sends out.  So it could be just the power supply caps and/or diode that are blown.   Those are cheap parts if you do it yourself.
